SWIM, a community for women entrepreneurs, is launching a new educational initiative called “Purpose Before Product.” This program, rooted in the forthcoming book “SWIM: From Credit to Capital,” aims to guide women business owners in defining their business objectives and economic viability before seeking financing.

The initiative emphasizes that the critical first step for entrepreneurs is understanding the “why” behind needing capital. This includes clarifying what the capital will achieve, its associated costs, the repayment obligations it will create, and the conditions necessary for success. Cyra Gish, SWIM New York Chapter President and co-author of the book, stated, “The first question is not simply how much money may be available. The first question is what the business is trying to accomplish and whether the economics justify the obligation.”

The “From Credit to Capital” framework encourages entrepreneurs to move beyond simply asking about available funds. It prompts them to consider the specific commercial objective. Different business needs, such as acquiring equipment, increasing inventory, funding marketing efforts, managing working capital, or facilitating acquisitions, require distinct financial strategies and carry unique risks and timelines. The program aims to ensure that financing decisions are aligned with these specific goals.

Nationwide Business Funding supports this approach by assisting qualified businesses in evaluating potential financing categories from independent providers. This process involves identifying objectives, mapping provider categories, comparing structures, and considering the timing of financing decisions. However, Nationwide Business Funding does not control provider approvals or terms, which are subject to the provider, business, applicant, and transaction.

SWIM teaches that external capital is not inherently beneficial or detrimental. Its impact depends on how a business utilizes the resources. Capital invested in a sound strategy can enhance capacity. Conversely, capital deployed into an objective lacking sufficient economics or execution may lead to increased obligations without achieving the desired outcomes. Therefore, the initiative treats capital deployment as a distinct discipline from capital access, aligning with the principles of financial judgment for women entrepreneurs.

A key aspect of the program is the emphasis on financial independence, which includes the ability to decline financing. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to determine if an opportunity should be delayed, modified, funded differently, or not pursued at all. SWIM posits that responsible financial decision-making involves the capacity to say “no” to unsuitable financing options. The ultimate educational goal is improved judgment, not simply maximizing borrowing.

The book “SWIM: From Credit to Capital” expands on this purpose-before-product concept, covering entrepreneurship, capital strategy, corporate structure, ownership, acquisitions, real estate, operating infrastructure, and financial wellness. The book is anticipated to be available on Amazon, with additional publication details accessible through Gish’s online presence.
