Dean Dunbar is a residential real estate broker with Brown Harris Stevens who works with buyers and sellers across New York City. His deals have ranged from $300K studios to $10 million luxury coops, and his map of the city runs from the Financial District to Inwood in Manhattan and from Brooklyn Heights to East Bushwick in Brooklyn. In more than 20 years in the business, he has handled over $100 million in total transaction volume. Dean is a native New Yorker, and he came to real estate after a first career in finance. He spent years on Wall Street, where he worked as a private wealth manager at Goldman Sachs and was a partner at a startup hedge fund. When he moved into real estate, he brought the habits of that world with him. Clients who come from finance and from other fields where people expect quick answers and careful work often find their way to him for that reason. He also runs his business in a more personal way than many agents in the city, and that is by design. For the people he works with, that means having one steady point of contact they can rely on at every stage.

From Finance to Real Estate

Dean graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and earned a BA cum laude from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. When he left finance, he saw that the skills he had relied on there- strategic advice, professionalism, and customer service- could carry over to a different asset class. Being a native New Yorker gave him local knowledge to build on. His real estate career started in corporate relocation. From there, he became a sales and leasing team leader, then a sales manager, and later a director of business development and corporate partnerships for the New York office of a leading national brokerage firm. Those roles are where much of his market knowledge comes from.

Available When Clients Need Him

Dean credits his training in wealth management for how he works with clients today. He said that work taught him to offer the highest level of responsiveness and professionalism.

“My clients appreciate that I go above and beyond for them; there is no ask that is too big or too small,” he said.

New York City real estate is highly competitive, and at the high net worth end of the market, clients expect him to be available 24/7. That expectation shapes how he runs his business. Rather than join a large team, as many city agents now do, he works mostly alone so he can stay in touch with clients from first contact to closing.

Knowing the Buildings Before the Showing

His ideal client is a high-net-worth buyer or seller with limited time who expects him to make the process as efficient as possible. For buyers, Dean screens apartments ahead of time based on what he already knows about the buildings, their layouts, and exposures. He frequently previews apartments himself and does FaceTime calls with clients, so the showings they attend in person focus on the most promising candidates.

He also urges buyers to be ready before the search begins. That means getting prequalified for a mortgage if they are financing, and completing a personal financial statement for a co-op purchase. Without that, he explained, an attractive property can be missed.

A Network Built Over Two Decades

Dean’s years in the industry, including his time as a sales manager, helped him build broad and deep relationships with other agents. He said those connections can be critically important in establishing credibility when he negotiates on a client’s behalf. He also keeps an extensive network of real estate attorneys, inspectors, contractors, and other professionals he can recommend to clients. His firm, Brown Harris Stevens, is not affiliated with StreetEasy, its owner Zillow, or Compass, and its agents can source the entire marketplace.

Recent Results and What Keeps Him Going

In August 2026, Dean represented a buyer whose contract ranked seventh on the weekly Olshan Report of Manhattan luxury contracts of $4 million and up. A month later, he placed among the top 40 of 2,274 agents in his firm’s monthly rankings for gross commissions.

He has lost a few big listings over the years, and his answer is simple: keep going and get the next one.

He was a single parent for a large part of his daughter’s upbringing after she lost her mother to breast cancer, and being the best father he could be has been a constant source of motivation. He loves what he does and hopes to keep doing it for years to come, with a little more travel along the way.
