Grit Daily Fashion: Beat the Summer Heat with These Calm, Collected Wardrobe Staples

Published on June 27, 2018

The rise of streetwear can be said to have–at least ideologically–democratized luxury fashion. The streetwear trend does not seem to be going away anytime soon. But the more significant macro trend is the overall casualization of fashion and, therefore, of culture. Before there was a large following behind the streetwear movement, now lead by the likes of Virgil Abloh, of Off-White and Louis Vuitton Men’s, and James Jebbia, of Supreme, there was normcore.

Normcore took the fashion world by storm in 2014. Founded by trend forecasting K-Hole, normcore fashion, essentially, is the art of simple sartorial choices. Those who ascribe to a normcore aesthetic believe that wearing simple clothing and blending into the crowd through our clothes is the most conscious and chic way to dress. While some have called this 2014 style bubble “a massive joke,” the normcore reminded us of the importance of basic staple clothing items such as the white t-shirt and your favorite pair of jeans. Here is a roundup of the most important basic items to have in your wardrobe.

1. Basic t-shirt fashion

This reliable garment needs no introduction. You can wear it to work under a blazer, to hang out with friends, or on a night out tuck into a skirt. It’s comfortable and timelessly chic — and more recently, stainproof. Make sure to invest in high-quality tees, tanks, and long sleeve shirts that make you feel and look great. You can thank me later.

2. Your favorite style of jeans

Do you think that a list of wardrobe staples could ever be complete without denim? Me neither. However, your go-to jean does not need to the classic blue and straight-fit jean. Personally, I love high-waisted, black skinny jeans. Whatever jean flatters your figure and personal style the best will do wonders for your wardrobe and your well-being.

3. A well-fitting blazer

Even if you do not work in an environment with a strict, corporate office dress code, it always is important to take yourself seriously. All kidding aside, these jackets are so versatile. From day wear to workwear to dinners out with friends, you always will look chic in a well-cut blazer.

4. Your trusted leather jacket

Over the past two decades, this item definitely has become a sartorial staple. The leather jacket simply goes with any outfit. Whether you’re wearing jeans and a t-shirt or a cocktail dress, this item always looks like a chic overcoat.

5. A tailored pant

As much as we love our denim, sometimes, jeans are not appropriate for any occasion. For this reason, it is essential to have a reliable pair[s] of tailored pants. Luckily, there are many pant styles that suit this wardrobe staple. Simple slacks, culottes, or a well-done trouser all can enable you to look incredibly chic and well-put together.

Of course, there are many more clothing items that can and should be added to this list. Regardless of your other wardrobe staples, we all can agree that, when in doubt, one can never go wrong when wearing an outfit comprised of basics out.
