Giga Energy Has a New Data Center Model: Bring Your Own Power

As AI adoption moves from early experimentation into everyday business operations, the demand on AI data centers continues to grow. The challenge is no longer limited to adding more servers or expanding physical capacity. AI infrastructure providers also have to answer a more difficult question: how to secure the reliable power needed to keep these facilities running. That has made energy availability a central factor in where new data centers are built, how quickly they can come online, and which developers are best positioned to meet rising demand.

Giga Energy is approaching that challenge with an integrated model built around its GigaBase data center sites. Instead of treating site development, power infrastructure, and manufacturing as separate steps managed across multiple vendors, the company coordinates those pieces within a single development framework. The result is a model designed to remove some of the friction that can slow data center projects, from early power planning to equipment readiness, and help bring new AI computing capacity online more efficiently.

The Issue of AI Data Centers and Power Infrastructure

Many AI expansion projects are encountering power constraints. Power availability and interconnection timelines can influence where AI projects get built — and, in some cases, whether projects move forward at all.

One report found that power and grid capacity are among the biggest obstacles to data center infrastructure build-out, with 72% of respondents describing the issue as very or extremely challenging. The professional services firm even puts a number on the backlog of power requests, pointing out that some grid-connection requests face waits of up to seven years.

These constraints are increasing interest in development models that address power availability earlier in the process. Giga Energy’s approach in Texas offers one example of how developers are trying to reduce power-related delays while adding AI computing capacity.

Giga Energy’s GigaBase Model

During the past several years, Giga Energy has expanded its work in AI infrastructure, and in that time, it has developed its GigaBase model as a way to coordinate the development and power requirements of new data center sites.

GigaBase is a vertically integrated approach to AI data center development that brings power infrastructure, manufacturing, and the compute facility within a single company, rather than a network of independent vendors.

This has allowed Giga Energy to establish a pre-built, pre-permitted network of sites that are available for development. Part of that early vetting process includes assessing how each site will be powered. The company works with utilities and other power providers to assess and secure capacity during the site-development process.

The goal is to address power availability before construction is complete. In addition, GigaBase systems come with medium-voltage switchgear, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) capacity, transformers, on-site backup generation, and other infrastructure needed to support data center operations.

Addressing Energy and Development Timelines

Addressing power requirements earlier in site development can reduce exposure to some interconnection and infrastructure delays. It is one part of Giga Energy’s broader effort to shorten development timelines.

Data center development often requires coordination among developers, contractors, utilities, permitting authorities, equipment suppliers, and other parties, which can introduce scheduling and approval delays. Often, several different vendors are required to properly plan, develop, construct, and power a site. This leads to an industry average of 18 months for site construction. In contrast, GigaBase centers are often finished in half that time.

Giga Energy’s model is designed to reduce some vendor handoffs by coordinating more of the development process internally. Contractor scheduling, utility coordination, equipment availability, and other factors can create additional delays.

Each of these steps can introduce delays. However, the GigaBase model is designed to overlap project elements, allowing different portions of the project to move forward concurrently.

Overcoming Power Limitations in AI Computing

Rising demand for AI computing is increasing the need for data center capacity, while growing power-request backlogs are creating constraints across the industry. However, Giga Energy’s GigaBase approach combines site development, power planning, infrastructure manufacturing, and data center construction within a more integrated development model.

By conducting portions of the development process in parallel through its GigaBase model, Giga Energy’s model offers one example of how developers are trying to deploy computing capacity amid increasingly constrained power infrastructure.
