‘Devs’ Trailer: We Must All Watch Alex Garland’s FX Limited Series

Few shows raise excitement levels this year as much as Devs. The eight-episode limited series hails from author, screenwriter, and director Alex Garland, whose beautiful brain is responsible for some of the finest science-fiction of the last 20 years. We’re talking about 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Dredd, Never Let Me Go, and the two tremendous films he directed, Ex Machina and Annihilation. He’s so damn consistent and so damn good, which is why nobody with a TV and FX or Hulu subscription in the world should pass up the opportunity to watch Devs, premiering in March.

The Trailer

Not much is known about Devs, but the story follows a software engineer, Lily Chan (Sonoya Mizuno), investigating a secretive development division. The man behind that division, her employer, she believes killed her boyfriend. Knowing how dense Garland’s stories tend to be, there’s going to be a whole lot more to Devs than a simple mystery to unfold.

Why You Should Be Excited

Well, I can’t repeat Garland’s name enough. He’s one of the most entertaining writers, not just science-fiction writers, around today. Garland’s characters, worlds, and stories are so full, vivid, and beautifully realized. He wrote and directed all eight episodes of Devs, which looks like a trip. There are some Ex Machina vibes going on here with the focus on one major location, under the control of the antagonist (Nick Offerman). Adding more fuel to the fire of excitement, Garland and Mizuno are working together again. There’s such a specificity and control to both of their work, making them a perfect match.
