Watch Mindy Kaling Reveal Her Favorite Things On TV

Published on June 24, 2019

If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling Netflix for so long that you’ve lost your enthusiasm to find anything at all, you’re not alone. With so much on TV and in the movies these days it seems almost overwhelming to find something new to watch. Most people start new shows or movies based on social media buzz or through word of mouth from their friends. For anyone that loves Mindy Kaling, hearing a list of her favorite shows available right now could inspire you to binge watch something new. A new interview that Kaling did with IMDb lists the actress’ favorite shows and movies right now, and some could surprise fans.

Kaling Reveals Her Watchlist

Among the shows on Mindy Kaling’s watch list was “Game of Thrones,” which concluded last month after 8 seasons that spanned over the course of the last decade. Despite the polarizing ending that left some fans angry, and others pleased, Kaling revealed that she lies firmly on “Team Daenerys” in a Tweet during the episode of the show titled “The Bells.” The penultimate episode is credited as being one of the most polarizing in the entire show, as its sharp plot twist turned the beloved Daenerys Targaryen into a villain after 8 and a half seasons of being the show’s hero.

Aside from “Game of Thrones,” the shows on Kaling’s watch list are quite surprising for fans that came to love her through her many TV sitcom characters. “This is very surprising to people but I don’t watch reality TV, which is crazy because every character I’ve ever played is obsessed with them,” she said in the video interview with IMDb. “Although I did start watching ‘American Ninja Warrior,'” she continued.

Other shows on her watchlist include HBO’s “Barry,” as well as the mega-popular series “Big Little Lies.” The former returned to HBO just a few weeks ago, with an all-star cast that includes names like Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, and Meryl Streep. “It’s so funny but I think it’s like a murder mystery, which I think is really hard to pull off,” she said of “Big Little Lies,” which made its return to HBO on June ninth.

Late Night

Kaling also promoted her newly released feature-length film in the interview. The film, titled “Late Night” follows a young, aspiring comedy writer named Molly Patel (Kaling) as she navigates through her first days on the job as part of the writing team for a late night talk show, hosted by Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson). When Mrs. Newbury learns that her show is at risk of being cancelled, she must make some internal changes to her writing team to win over new audiences. Her company suggests hiring some diverse writers, and when Molly Patel (who got her comedy experience by talking over a loudspeaker at her factory job) comes in for an interview.

Eventually the two must learn to work together for the sake of the show, despite their differences. The film is Kaling’s first feature-length film that she both wrote and starred in. “When I was researching for a late night talk show, since I come from the sitcom world, I re-watched every season of [The Larry Sanders Show],” she said of where she drew her inspiration for “Late Night.” The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
