The nonprofit sector plays an essential role in addressing societal challenges and advocating for marginalized communities. To succeed, nonprofits require compassionate, forward-looking individuals such as Sophia Rossovsky, who works to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.
As the executive director of City Access New York, Rossovsky has spent over a decade ensuring that people with disabilities have access to the resources they need to succeed.
A Career Rooted in Education and Cultural Insight
Rossovsky’s career began in Moscow, where she taught middle and high school for four years. “My time as an educator gave me the tools to make a real difference,” she recalls. Afterward, she spent 13 years working in joint venture organizations, gaining leadership experience that would later benefit her in her nonprofit career.
Rossovsky’s career highlights included working as an interpreter and coordinator for the NBC series “Peter the Great” from 1984 to 1985. This role allowed her to use her language skills and navigate complex cultural challenges.
Rossovsky’s academic background also set the stage for her career in the nonprofit sector. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and linguistics from Maurice Thorez Moscow Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, now Moscow State Linguistic University, and a master’s degree in education and linguistics in 1984.
Leadership at City Access New York
In 2014, Rossovsky became the executive director of City Access New York, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing inclusive services for individuals with disabilities. She manages the organization’s daily operations, including strategic planning and budgets, and works closely with the board of directors.
“Empowering individuals with disabilities to live fulfilling lives has always been the goal,” Rossovsky confirms. Under her leadership, City Access New York has launched programs such as a bowling league for people with disabilities. Now in its seventh season, the league has grown to include 14 teams. Through City Access New York, Rossovsky also offers music classes, museum visits and dance studio sessions to individuals with IDD and visual disabilities. “These opportunities help people with disabilities connect with their communities in new ways,” she explains. Additionally, City Access New York has partnerships and contracts with a number of client organizations across the city. As a result, the nonprofit is able to place individuals with disabilities into productive jobs and internships that enable them to serve their communities while building professional skills.
A Vision for Empowerment and Change
Rossovsky attributes her success to her drive and passion for learning. “When you do something you enjoy, you put more time and effort into it,” she explains. She believes success comes from supporting others and helping them grow. This approach has guided her leadership at City Access New York.
Looking ahead, Rossovsky plans to empower her team by allowing employees to run small programs without relying on centralized management. “I want to give my team the tools to lead,” she says. She envisions expanding opportunities for people with disabilities by offering enriching experiences that inspire growth.
Looking Forward: Continuing the Mission of Empowerment
Rossovsky remains committed to her work and the future of City Access New York. She plans to continue developing the organization and expanding opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Her goal is to create a model nonprofit that makes these opportunities available to everyone, regardless of ability.
