Shalisa James Built a Career on Vocal Harmony, Now She’s Teaching It to Corporate Teams

For thirty years, Shalisa James built a career out of getting four unaccompanied voices to sound like one. She did it without a conductor, without instruments to hide behind, and without a soundboard to fix the mix after the fact. Now she is taking that skill into a different room: the corporate keynote stage, where she tells executives that the fix for a fractured hybrid team probably is not another dashboard. It is actually listening to each other.

James owns Entertainment Central Productions and has spent more than three decades in live entertainment, including several years singing with the a cappella group Toxic Audio. She currently serves as vocal director for stage shows at Universal Studios Florida and also directs the Frog Choir at Universal Studios Hollywood, two jobs that keep her inside the same kind of real-time coordination she now describes on stage. Her new keynote, Harmony in Action, draws a direct line between those two worlds: the real-time listening that keeps an a cappella quartet in tune, and the coordination problem she sees in teams split between the office and a screen.

The Discipline of a Cappella, Applied to the Boardroom

James’s argument comes straight from her own stage experience. A four-person vocal group has no instruments to hide behind, and once the song starts, there is no conductor keeping people in line. Each singer has to track the other three closely enough to adjust pitch, timing and volume in real time, without anyone calling it out loud. James tells corporate audiences that is the discipline missing from most hybrid teams: not a new piece of software, but people actually paying attention to each other when half the room is in the building and half is on a screen. By that logic, a meeting with the cameras off is not so different from a singer who stops listening to the other three and just sings louder.

“You can’t fake harmony, on a stage or on a call,” James said. “Somebody has to actually listen to the other people in the room, and that’s the whole talk.”

A Team-Building Business That Already Works With Universal and Warner Bros.

The keynote did not start as a keynote. It grew out of Entertainment Central Productions’ existing client work, where the company builds custom songwriting sessions and dueling piano events for corporations looking for team-building that does not feel like a forced exercise. The company has also partnered with Universal Studios and Warner Bros. on immersive attractions, including work with the Tonight Show team on Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon. James says Harmony in Action came directly out of that work: clients who hired her company for entertainment kept asking, afterward, how to bring the same energy into their regular meetings. The keynote, in other words, answers a question her clients were already asking, rather than chasing a trend on the speaking circuit.

A Grammy Nomination and Three Vocalist of the Year Awards

James’s credentials are unusual for a speaker whose subject is team dynamics. She has a Grammy nomination for lead vocal work with Toxic Audio on a Broadway concert recording of Hair, a Drama Desk Award tied to the same group, and three Female Vocalist of the Year honors from the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America. None of those awards were given for public speaking. They were given for the same ear for timing and balance that she now asks executives to apply to their own teams, which is part of what makes the pitch land: she is not a consultant borrowing a music metaphor. She is a working vocalist describing the only method she has ever actually used.

Still Performing Through Stage Four Cancer

James has kept performing, directing and now speaking while being treated for Stage Four cancer, an experience she wrote about in her memoir, Three Years Left, Adventures in Music, Travel, Faith, and Terminal Cancer. The schedule has not changed because of the diagnosis so much as absorbed it. The vocal direction work at Universal Studios Florida continues, the Frog Choir still rehearses in Hollywood, and Harmony in Action is booking alongside both.

Entertainment Central Productions books Harmony in Action for corporate and association events nationwide, alongside James’s ongoing performance and directing schedule. Inquiries go through the company directly, with Shalisa James as owner.
