Mattel Launches Gender-Neutral ‘Creatable World’ Doll Line

Published on September 26, 2019

On Wednesday, Mattel announced the release of a brand new line of dolls that makes doll-play accessible to all children, regardless of gender identity.

According to a news release by the company, Creatable World™ dolls offer “a customizable doll-line offering endless combinations all in one box.”

Creatable World™ invites kids to create their own characters, which includes extensive wardrobe options, accessories and wigs which allow kids to style the doll with short or long hair, or in a skirt, pants, or both.

Mattel worked alongside a dedicated team of experts, parents, physicians and most importantly, kids, to create this one-of-a-kind play experience.

Toys are a reflection of culture and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels,” said Kim Culmone, Senior Vice President of Mattel Fashion Doll Design.

Through research, we heard that kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms. This line allows all kids to express themselves freely which is why it resonates so strongly with them. We’re hopeful Creatable World will encourage people to think more broadly about how all kids can benefit from doll play.”

We spoke with Valerie Vacante, gaming expert and founder of Collabsco and co-founder of TechUp, about Mattel’s latest announcement.

Grit Daily: Where do you feel Creatable World fits into this gaming sector?

Valerie Vacante: The Creatable World line celebrates and empowers kids to see themselves, who they are and who they want to be, through inclusivity and representation.

Mattel Gender Inclusivity

In a world where creativity is limitless, Mattel has created limitless ways for kids and family to play,” Vacante told us. “All children have hopes, dreams, and aspirations of who they want to be; Mattel has created a way for all children to express themselves with the ‘Creatable World’ collection.”

Over the years, Mattel has evolved their Barbie line to be the most diverse and inclusive line on the market, and now, according to Vacante, ALL children in the world can see themselves and express themselves in the way that reflects them and inspires them.

The Creatable World™ doll line consists of six different doll kits that are available in a variety of skin tones. Each kit includes one doll, two hairstyle options and endless styling possibilities. The product has a suggested retail price of $30 and can be purchased at major retailers online including Amazon, Target and Walmart. For more information, please visit www.CreatableWorld.com.
