A lash expert and creator of an original eyelash extension method talks about how attitudes toward personal appearance are changing in the age of social media trends.
The global professional eyelash extension market continues to grow. According to 360iResearch, it will reach $1.59 billion in 2026 and could grow to $2.44 billion by 2032. As the market grows, approaches to the profession itself are changing too. Today it’s no longer enough for a lash artist to simply master a particular technique. What matters more and more is an individual approach, one that takes into account eye shape and position, the condition of natural lashes and the desired result, along with the safety of the procedure, the quality of materials, and an understanding of the client’s anatomy.
One of the specialists advancing this approach in the lash industry is Xeniya Yemelyanova. In almost 10 years in the profession, she has gone from a practicing lash artist to the creator of her own method, Double Arrow Effect, as well as an instructor and the author of two professional books on eyelash extensions. Xeniya has trained more than 1,000 specialists, and her students go on to apply what they’ve learned in their own practices, opening studios in different countries. She has also won awards at professional lash industry competitions on multiple occasions, and in early September she received the international IBA Beauty Awards title of Innovator in Lash Technologies.
The following looks at how Xeniya built her own professional system, and what from her experience might be useful to anyone hoping to grow in the profession and find their own approach to working in the beauty industry.
The Effect of Two Arrows
Xeniya Yemelyanova’s professional practice began in Kazakhstan more than 10 years ago. Three years in, she registered her own eyelash extension studio, Beauty Studio, where she combined client work with training other lash artists. Even then, she had already formed the core principle of her approach: rather than following universal templates, she chooses and adapts techniques to each client’s individual features. Experience showed her that popular effects don’t always achieve the desired result, especially when working with Asian eye shapes.
“I saw that the same extension pattern could look harmonious on one woman and, on another, visually weigh down her gaze. For example, with Asian eye shapes, some popular effects can make the eyes look even narrower, so I started looking for ways to do extensions that would highlight each woman’s individual features,” Xeniya says.
That’s how Double Arrow Effect came about, Xeniya Yemelyanova’s signature lash-shaping method. The name reflects the method’s underlying principle: by controlling the direction and distribution of the lashes, the artist creates two visual focal points that help accentuate the shape of the eyes. Unlike standard patterns, Double Arrow Effect doesn’t involve a universal sequence that the artist simply repeats for every client. Before the procedure, the artist has to take into account the eye’s shape and position, the structure of the eyelid, the direction of lash growth, and the condition of the natural lashes. Based on that, the artist decides where to strengthen or shift the visual emphasis, how to distribute length and curl, and what volume will work best.
Special attention goes to the inner and outer corners of the eye. By shaping each area differently, the method allows two visual effects to be combined at once, an eye that looks more open and, at the same time, more elongated. Throughout, the artist has to monitor the load placed on the natural lashes, so the choice of length and volume is always guided by the condition of the client’s own lashes.
Double Arrow Effect quickly spread beyond Xeniya Yemelyanova’s own studio and gained recognition in the professional community as an original, independent approach to lash shaping. Today, elements of the method are officially included in the workshops and practices of other lash artists. “It matters to me that this method lives on beyond my own studio, and that it helps other artists build their own practice around an individual approach,” Xeniya Yemelyanova notes.
Her Own School of Lash Artists
As other lash artists began reaching out to Xeniya Yemelyanova, she started systematizing her experience and shaping it into a coherent educational program. It came to include the structure and growth phases of natural lashes, shaping technique, choosing materials and equipment, workspace organization, safety and sterilization, as well as more advanced techniques and creating different effects.
Later, this system was formalized in a pair of professional manuals: the two-part book “I Know Everything About Eyelash Extensions.” The first volume is aimed at beginners, walking readers step by step through the fundamentals of the profession, from the structure of natural lashes and workspace setup to procedure technique, materials, and safety requirements. The second is aimed at practicing specialists looking to advance their skills, covering complex techniques, volume work, fan formation, shaping, curl combinations, and creating different effects.
“It mattered to me that after training, a person would understand not just how to perform the procedure, but why it’s done that particular way. An artist needs to be able to analyze a situation independently and adapt technique to a specific client, not just reproduce what they were shown in a course,” Xeniya explains.
To date, more than 3,000 people around the world have completed Xeniya Yemelyanova’s professional and educational programs.
What Happens After Training
Graduates apply what they’ve learned in their own practices, and many go on to open studios and salons in different countries, continuing to follow the principles they learned from Xeniya.
“What matters most to me is seeing that, like me, my students put naturalness and individuality first. Of course we all like to experiment, but we never copy trends mindlessly. Our shared goal isn’t to change how a woman looks, it’s to help her see her own beauty,” Xeniya Yemelyanova notes.
Over time, training becomes a foundation her students build on for further growth. They develop their own professional style, expand the range of services they offer, build a personal brand, and pass their experience on to others. In this way, a professional community of lash experts from around the world has gradually formed around Xeniya Yemelyanova’s signature method.
Building a Business Twice
Xeniya has had to build a business from the ground up twice. The first time was in Kazakhstan; the second came after she moved to the United States, where she opened Xeniya Yemelyanova Beauty Studio in Florida. “For me, that was a real test of how universal my professional system actually was. In Kazakhstan, I had already gone from lash artist to running my own studio, and after moving I had to build a practice all over again, this time in the US. The country, the language, the market, and the clients all changed, but the knowledge and principles I work by stayed with me,” the expert shares.
Today, her studio in Florida welcomes women of many different backgrounds, with different eye shapes and positions, eyelid structures, and natural lash conditions. Xeniya continues to look for individual solutions in lash shaping, ones that take into account not only anatomy but also lifestyle and each client’s personal preferences.
Not Just a List of Titles
The growth of the eyelash extension market has gone hand in hand with the growth of its professional community. International championships and awards for lash artists are now held regularly in different countries, judging not only technique and quality of work but also professional innovations, teaching, and a specialist’s contribution to the industry. For lash artists, these events are a chance to share their own work with colleagues and promote a more thoughtful, individualized approach to working with clients.
Xeniya Yemelyanova takes part in these competitions and championships herself. In 2023, she received a number of professional awards and nominations, including Guru of Lash Industry, Lash Expert, Top Master Lashmaker, Top 10 Lashmakers, Top Lashmaker, and Master of the Year. That same year, she began appearing as an industry expert as well, judging the Lash Brow Champ IX and X competitions and taking part in Golden Beauty as both judge and speaker.
In 2024, her educational work also earned international recognition when her school was honored at IBA Beauty Awards XIX in the Best Beauty School category. In 2026, she continued judging at the World Beauty Championship WBC XVIII, was invited to join the official judging panel for IBPA Beauty Awards 2026 in Los Angeles in the Lash category, and recently received the IBA Beauty Awards XXVIII title of Innovator in Lash Techniques herself.
Being invited to judge at the World Beauty Championship WBC XVIII and IBPA Beauty Awards 2026 marked an important recognition of Xeniya Yemelyanova’s professional expertise. Judges evaluate competitors’ work, and the winners go on to become professional benchmarks for other lash artists, helping to set quality standards across the industry. “Being invited to judge top international awards isn’t about the title, it’s about responsibility. Your judgment affects which work becomes an example for other artists to follow,” Xeniya Yemelyanova admits.
In her view, the international recognition of her achievements confirms that an approach built around the client’s individuality, rather than blindly following trends, is now valued in the lash industry. “I’m glad that an individual approach is gaining more and more recognition. I hope that in the future the lash industry will keep developing even more, and that professional standards will grow along with it,” she concludes.
