Virginia National Bank (VNB) has launched a new initiative aimed at equipping high school juniors and seniors with essential financial literacy and leadership skills. The Finance Career and Leadership Academy (FCLA) is a free, in-depth program designed to address the gaps in financial education often found in both families and school systems.
Meghan Crider, President of Educational Programs for VNB, explained that the academy helps students build strong foundations in personal finance, banking, professional skills, and career readiness. “It also provides an opportunity, a unique opportunity for young people interested in a career in banking and finance because the top performers in the academy are then considered for VNB’s college program,” Crider stated. This program offers a path for students to potentially have their college tuition paid for by VNB while also working for the bank.
Academy Offers Comprehensive Training
The FCLA is described as a challenging yet rewarding program for highly motivated students. Participants learn about wealth building and how to outperform competition in the workforce. Crider highlighted that the top performers in the academy can be considered for VNB’s college program, which could lead to their college degrees being paid for. The initial six months of the program involve full-time work for VNB, with full benefits, while completing college coursework.

The curriculum is delivered through an online partnership, and students can earn a certificate for up to 15 courses, equivalent to 39 credit hours. This allows students to gain nearly two years’ worth of schooling within their first six months. The program emphasizes that while it prepares students for careers in banking and finance, the core focus is on personal financial literacy and leadership skills applicable to any field.
Skills for Any Career Path
Crider emphasized that the FCLA is open to all students, regardless of their intended major. “Whatever field you’re going into, you need to know how to manage money well and how to leverage it so that your money works for you,” she said. The program teaches students how to manage their finances effectively and how to present themselves professionally to advance in their careers and secure promotions.
VNB is hosting community information sessions for interested parents and students. The first session is scheduled for October 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., followed by another on November 5 at the same time. Both sessions will be held at VNB’s office on Pantops. The application deadline for students is November 20 by midnight. The next FCLA academy course is set to begin in the spring semester, with classes commencing on January 11. Further details about the program can be found by listening to the “My Forever Bank, Personal Stories” podcast.
