Published on September 21, 2018

The final episodes of CNN’s hit travel series, Parts Unknown, will begin airing this Sunday following the death of its host, Anthony Bourdain earlier this year. The series was the second to star the late chef after Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. The latter of which aired on the Travel Channel from 2005-2012. The final episodes of Parts Unknown will be narrated by various guests and members of the show. The final two episodes of the season will be in tribute to the late host who’s tragic and sudden death rocked the world back in June.

Remembering Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain got his start in the culinary industry working in kitchens around the east coast before attending The Culinary Institute of America in 1978. He worked in various restaurants around New York City before getting his start as a writer. The release of his first book, Kitchen Confidential, was an extension of an article he had written for The New York Times. From there, Bourdain garnered a lot of attention as a gifted writer. He eventually landed a gig as the host of a travel show on the Travel Channel. Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations was where viewers around the world fell in love with his tales and experiences.

The show ended in 2012 when Bourdain contracted to work with CNN on Parts Unknown. No Reservations and Parts Unknown took Bourdain around the world. From Borneo to Paris, Morocco to Los Angeles. The show, which began in 2013, has won five Emmy Awards. One of which was awarded posthumously at this year’s awards show. Barack Obama appeared on the show in 2016 when he and Bourdain dined in a Hanoi noodle house. “He taught us about food — but more importantly, about its ability to bring us together. To make us a little less afraid of the unknown. We’ll miss him,” Barack Obama said in a tweet following the death of the television host.

At the time of his death, Bourdain was dating Italian actress Asia Argento. Argento appeared on Parts Unknown in 2017 during an episode about Rome. The actress played a key role in the Harvey Weinstein scandal in 2017. Bourdain was a vocal supporter of Argento speaking up against Weinstein.

The first episode in the season takes viewers to Kenya, where Bourdain brought along W. Kamau Bell. Bell is currently the host of CNN’s United Shades of America. It was released this week by CNN to announce the airing of the final season. “Tony has made some of the best television in the history of television,” Bell says in the touching clip.
