No One Asked But Here It Is: A Movie About The Beatles

Published on February 5, 2019

How many times in the last couple of months have you come across a Beatles t-shirt while flipping through a clothing rack? If you’re like me, it happened yesterday—but I shop a lot.

It was announced this week that Peter Jackson has signed on to create a movie about The Beatles. Last Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of the rooftop concert that marked the last time the Beatles performed together. The announcement came on the day of the anniversary, and will document the final album that The Beatles made together. The final Beatles concert happened on the roof of Apple Records in London in 1969.

The film, directed by Peter Jackson, will document the making of Let It Be, the final Beatles album. Jackson announced his part in the film and said that it would give fans the fly on the wall experience during the making of the album (do we want this?) . The director will be compiling over 55 hours of footage into a feature-length film about the band. According to Jackson, the footage has never been seen before and will give fans a brand new look at the band.

Peter Jackson is a New Zealand-based filmmaker known for the Lord of the Rings series. Jackson is also known for other films like the Hobbit, The Lovely Bones, King Kong, and The Adventures of TinTin. Jackson has made his career as well-known Hollywood filmmaker for his use of special effects in fantasy films. However, Jackson will be more than capable of delivering a film about The Beatles that will satisfy curious fans.

The living members of The Beatles are backing the project. Other subjects in the film to fully cooperate with the project are Yoko Ono, wife of the late John Lennon, and Olivia Harrison, the widow of George Harrison. The album that the film follows was finished after the band had broken up. Let It Be was completed by Phil Specter and released in 1970. The album used additional background singers and snippets of different recording sessions that the band had made while still together. This is the second film about the Beatles since the band broke up in 1970.

This isn’t the first film about an older band to come out in recent years. Obviously, since you would have to be living under a rock to not have heard baout Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about Queen and Freddie Mercury, that was released last fall. The film has recieved tons of critical praise from both audiences and critics. It’s been sweeping through awards season in praise of lead actor Rami Malek’s performance as Mercury. However, the film fell into controversy when it was released that there were sexual abuse accusations against the films director, Brian Singer.

The Peter Jackson film about The Beatles is currently in production. It is the second documentary about the band to come out following the film directed by Ron Howard in 2016. There is currently no official release date for the film.
