Netflix to End Orange is the New Black with Season 7 in 2019

Litchfield will be closing its doors permanently in 2019.

Orange is the New Black was one of the first Netflix original shows to make headlines when it was released in 2013. This week Netflix announced that the show would be ending following the release of its 7th season in 2019. The show was groundbreaking for the television industry in so many ways and saw dozens of nominations and awards throughout its time on Netflix. Netflix now produces and releases dozens of original shows on its platform.

During its time on Netflix, Orange is the New Black saw many milestones for online streaming as a viable platform for original content. The show, in a way, pioneered the way for shows like Stranger Things, The Handmaid’s Tale and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to see huge success online. When it was released, Orange is the New Black saw both criticism and acclaim for its groundbreaking portrayal of women. The show’s diverse cast earned it praise throughout its six-year tenure and was one of the first television shows to cast a trans woman to play a trans character.

Bringing Orange Is The New Black To Life

Creator Jenji Kohan, who also created the hit TV-show “Weeds” based Orange is the New Black off of Piper Kerman’s popular memoir of the same name. The book discusses Kerman’s year in a women’s prison. The show tackles issues like the private-owned prison system, gun violence, themes of sexuality and identity. The show earned 12 Primetime Emmy Awards in its first season. One of these awards included the award for Outstanding Comedy.

“During production of Season 1, everyone involved with Orange Is The New Black felt like we knew a special secret we couldn’t wait to share with the world. Since then, we have laughed, cried, raged, and roared with the women of Litchfield, and every moment spent with them felt like borrowed time — too good to last forever,” the Vice President of Original Content for Netflix Cindy Holland said in an interview with Deadline.

The Final Season

Orange is the New Black was one of the first shows of its kind. Since its premiere in 2013 Netflix has picked up dozens of titles and become one of the main production houses of modern film and television. The success of Orange is the New Black paved the way for Netflix’s success. Now, online streaming platforms are creating more and more original content every year. Though Orange is the New Black may be over, Netflix won’t be slowing down anytime soon. Shows like Stranger Things will be coming back in 2019 and beyond, and new shows like the House on Haunted Hill has seen viral success since its release this month.
