The show’s diverse cast earned it praise throughout its six-year tenure and was one of the first television shows to cast a trans woman to play a trans character.
Bringing Orange Is The New Black To Life
Creator Jenji Kohan, who also created the hit TV-show “Weeds” based Orange is the New Black off of Piper Kerman’s popular memoir of the same name. The book discusses Kerman’s year in a women’s prison. The show tackles issues like the private-owned prison system, gun violence, themes of sexuality and identity. The show earned 12 Primetime Emmy Awards in its first season. One of these awards included the award for Outstanding Comedy.
