20 Movies To See In 2020

2020 is set to become a prime example of the new face of blockbusters: superheroes and sequels. More “sure hits” are being churned out by studios than ever. Here are some movies to look out for.

Birds of prey
Release date: 2.7.2020

Directed by Cathy Yan, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn returns to the big screen. Harley Quinn ditched Joker and is teaming up with fellow female badasses Huntress and Black Canary to take down Black Mask. The movie is receiving a lot of buzz and will hopefully redeem Quinn from Suicide Squad (2016).

Top Gun: Maverick
Release date: 6.26.2020

Tom Cruise returns to the big screen as Maverick the crowd’s favorite Navy aviator. The movie follows Maverick train the now late Goose’s son played by Miles Teller and is sure to excite with many scenes of flying and explosions. The stellar cast is rounded out with new and old faces including Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Val Kilmer.

Wonder Woman 1984
Release date: 6.5.2020

The great Patty Jenkins returns to direct Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. This highly anticipated movie picks up several decades after the last movie. Diana now lives in the 80s and still mourns Steve when he mysteriously returns from the dead. Or does he? Is this actually part of the Cheetah and Maxwell Lord’s evil plan? Who knows! But there will be many unmissable scenes including the Amazons preparing for battle and Steve Trevor in a fanny pack.

A quiet place part II
Release date: 3.20.2020

Written and directed by John Krasinski, the sequel promises to live up to the original’s hype. The entire cast is reprising their roles as the Abbott Family. After being attacked by the creatures in their home at the end of the first film, the Abbott’s are forced to flee and look for home elsewhere. There will be more flashbacks to help explain the origins of the creatures. There are a lot of suspense and scares in store for those that want to see this movie.

Black Widow
Release date: 5.1.2020

This movie takes place right after Captain America: Civil War. The audience gets to see what Natasha was up to after the huge rift as she confronts her past and tries to figure out who is her new family. Florence Pugh is introduced as Yelena Belova, a sister figure to Natasha who also trained in the red room. David Harbour also joins the MCU in this film as a Russian super-soldier.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Release date: 7.10.2020

After Trevor, played by Finn Wolfhard, and his family get evicted from their house they are forced to move into the dilapidated house their grandfather left them. While exploring the house ghost busting equipment is found and soon enough ghosts descend upon the town and Trevor is forced to continue his grandfather’s legacy as a ghostbuster. Paul Rudd joins the cast as Trevor’s teacher. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson reprise their roles.

Eternals
Release date: 11.6.2020

From director Chloe Zhao and based off an obscure comic, this new addition to the MCU features an all star ensemble cast including Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani. The mix of comedians and actions stars is sure to produce a prime example of the MCU.

The Woman in the Window
Release date: 5.15.2020

Directed by Joe Wright this novel based movie stars Amy Adams as an agoraphobe who witnesses her neighbor, played by Julianne Moore, get murdered by her husband. When she reports the crime to the police they do not believe her and she is forced to collect clues on her own. As she collects clues she is forced to confront her own insanity.  Gary Oldman, and Anthony Mackie round out the cast.

Coming 2 America
Release date: 12.2.2020

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall return from Zamunda after Murphy’s now King Akeem discovers he has a son in America. This is the sequel that I have always wanted without knowing it. The trailer has yet to be released but, with many reprising their roles and other greats added to the cast, this movie is sure to be a hilarious adventure. 

Like a Boss
Release date: 1.10.2020

Director Miguel Arteta brings us this flick about two women, played by Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne, who start a beauty company. Things go awry when their big investor (Salma Hayek) tries to steal the company out from under them. Tiffany Haddish and Rose Bryne make a hilarious duo, especially across from Salma Hayek. This movie will make you feel good and your stomach hurt from laughing.

Halloween Kills
Release date: 10.16.2020

Michael Myers is back and wreaking havoc on Halloween night. Don’t fear because Jaime Lee Curtis is also back as Laurie Strode. The trailer and premise have not been released yet but many cast members from both the 2018 and 1978 films are reprising their roles. Who will Michael Meyers seek revenge on first? 

Godzilla vs Kong
Release date: 11.20.2020

There is not much to say about this movie which is how it should be. All you need to know is Godzilla and Kong fight and it is sure to be a fight of epic proportions. All you have to decide is whether to see it in 2D, 3D, or IMAX. 

The New Mutants
Release date: 4.3.2020

Acquired by Disney from Fox this movie directed by Josh Boone continues to examine the dark side of what mutants go through. Many new young faces portray mutants stuck facility where they are experimented on. Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga star.

In The Heights
Release date: 6.26.2020

This hit broadway show turned movie will help you get over all your trauma from Cats (2019). Based on the musical by Quiara Algria Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda comes this musical about life in Washington Heights. Complete with many memorable songs and dances this is sure to be a hit with the entire family.

This animated flick will explore the beginnings of the gang’s friendship and the founding of Mystery Inc. This movie will bring back nostalgia for the adults and create new memories for the kids. While you’re waiting for this iteration of Scooby Doo you can binge almost every other version on Netflix.

Venom 2
Release date: 11.2.2020

Directed by Andy Serkis, Tom Hardy reprises his role as Eddie Brock to team up with Venom his alien symbiote Venom to face off against Carnage played by Woody Harrelson. This battle was teased at the end of the first movie. Venom 2 will surely be dark, funny, and as fun to watch as the first movie. The trailer has not been released yet. 

Free Guy
Release date: 7.3.2020

Starring the always hilarious Ryan Renolds as a man who discovers he is a background character in a violent video game. After this discovery the man decides to create his own story. This movie promises bring us the same funny, self aware Ryan Renolds from Deadpool.

Moribius 
Release Date: 7.31.2020

From director Daniel Espinosa who brought you Life (2017) and Child 44 (2015) comes this comic book adaptation. It stars Jared Leto as Dr. Morbius who while trying to cure himself of a blood disease accidentally turns himself into a vampire. 2020 is really the year for movies based on odd comics and this ranks #1 on the odd scale but it is worth your attention.

The King’s Man
Release date: 9.18.2020

This third installment of the Kingsman franchise takes a look into titular company’s past. Ralph Fiennes as a King’s man in the 1900s. This movie will bring you all the action of the first two movies in a period piece.

Sonic the Hedgehog 
Release date: 2.14.2020

This list would not be complete without this odd choice for a film. It is as if someone saw James Marsden in Hop and thought they should recreate it. As odd and off-putting as it may seem I do suggest you take your date or your child to go see this movie on Valentine’s Day. James Marsden and Jim Carrey are sure to delight in the wild ride this movie will be.
