Jennifer Kellogg: Building a Business Through Hard Work and Consistency

A hands-on entrepreneur creates lasting success through detailed, steady work

For many small business owners, success does not come from a single breakthrough moment. It is built over time through long hours, steady effort, and a willingness to do the work others avoid. In service-based industries, especially, reputation is earned day by day.

Jennifer Kellogg understands that process firsthand. As co-owner of Dust n Time and Just n Time in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, she has spent more than a decade building two businesses from the ground up through persistence and hands-on work.

“I just worked hard and never gave up,” Kellogg says. “I still don’t give up. I work hard every day and dream big.”

Starting From the Ground Up

Kellogg did not begin her career as a business owner. After working various jobs, including factory roles in West Virginia and a laboratory technician position at the University of Maryland, she eventually found her way into the cleaning industry.

“I got a job with a woman who had a cleaning business,” Kellogg recalls. “I was just really good at it.” Over time, she took on more responsibility and began managing operations. When the business began to decline, she saw an opportunity. “I was like, ‘Well, maybe I can do this on my own,’” she says.

In 2009, Kellogg launched Dust n Time. Within two years, the business had gained strong traction in a competitive market. “Usually, there are over 300 cleaning businesses here each year, and most of them won’t make it to the first year,” she explains. Her early success came from paying close attention to clients’ needs and adjusting her approach.

Building a Different Approach

From the beginning, Kellogg focused on doing the details that others often skipped. “I do the things that other people don’t do,” she says. That includes consistent attention to areas like blinds and baseboards, which she ensures are cleaned every time. To maintain that level of quality, she built larger teams.

“Having two people clean a 5,000-square-foot house was overwhelming,” Kellogg explains. By expanding her teams to four or five people, she was able to improve both efficiency and quality.

Today, Dust n Time employs more than 25 people, with several team members having been with the company for over a decade. Kellogg manages operations, trains staff, and oversees scheduling, maintaining a hands-on role in the business.

At the same time, Kellogg and her husband built Just n Time Inc., a handyman service offering a range of projects from furniture building to home additions. “It took him a long time,” she says of her husband’s path. “He had to work for somebody else while Just n Time was growing.” Over time, the business reached a point where it could stand on its own.

Sacrifice and Growth

Building both businesses required years of sacrifice. In the early stages, Kellogg handled nearly every aspect of the work herself. “I worked long hours and got up in the middle of the night to do paperwork,” she says. For years, weekends were dedicated entirely to the business. “We didn’t have off for a Saturday for probably 10 years.”

Kellogg also spent a decade working in the field before transitioning more into office management. At one point, she was coordinating large rental operations, sending out dozens of workers at a time. Eventually, she chose to scale back and focus on maintaining a more manageable operation.

Turning Effort Into Stability

Today, Kellogg continues to run her businesses with a focus on consistency and quality. While the scale has shifted, her approach remains the same. Determination, she says, is what made the difference. Learning what worked, listening to clients, and adjusting along the way helped shape her success.

Kellogg’s journey reflects a simple but steady path. By doing the work, staying consistent, and focusing on what others overlook, she has built a business that continues to serve her community and support her team.
