Honestly, this is a story I love telling because it completely flips the script on what people think SEO is.
We had a Toronto film festival come to us — an amazing organization, been around for years, deeply passionate about what they do. They had been pumping out content for a long time. By the time they knocked on our door, they were sitting at 435 pages. From the outside, it looked solid. It looked like they were doing the work.
But when I got into Google Search Console and started digging through the page performance data, I genuinely had to double-check what I was looking at.
340 pages. Zero clicks. Not a trickle.
Only 4 pages were doing anything meaningful. 4 out of 435.
So I sat down with them and said—look, I have to be straight with you. This content isn’t working for you. It’s working against you. Google is crawling hundreds of pages that say nothing valuable, and it’s dragging down the pages that actually matter.
They looked at me like I had two heads. One of them said, “Simar, we’ve spent years building this. Are you seriously telling us to delete it?”
Yes. That’s exactly what I’m telling you.
And I get it, it’s a hard pill to swallow. But the data doesn’t lie. So we went through everything systematically, used GSC’s coverage and performance reports to identify what was indexed but dead, and we de-indexed roughly half the site. 435 pages down to 230.
The client was uncomfortable the whole time. But I’ve learned to trust the data over the discomfort.
After that we rebuilt proper topic clusters, intent mapping, and tight internal linking. Then used GSC to watch pages sitting at positions 4 through 15 and went back in to sharpen those up and push them into the top 5.
Six months later, pages earning 100+ clicks a month went from 4 to 32. That’s 600% growth. We went from zero pages hitting 1,000 monthly clicks to four of them.
We didn’t publish a single extra page to get there. We grew by cutting.
That project shaped how I approach every client now. More content is not the answer. Better content, fewer distractions, and the courage to let go of what isn’t serving you.

Connect Orphaned Content for Indexation Gains
Last year, I partnered with Earth Funeral on a technical SEO project for their newly redesigned Webflow website. Using Google Search Console, I analyzed indexation rates and discovered that a significant portion of their content wasn’t appearing in search results. Add Targeted FAQs to Meet Questions
We once used Google Search Console to uncover a content angle we did not expect. In Performance we filtered to a single page and sorted queries by impressions. The top terms were not the ones we wrote for. They were location based and question based which meant people were looking for context and reassurance.
We created a small expansion on the page with a focused FAQ that matched those questions exactly. We also updated the heading structure so the new sections were easy for Google to understand. Next we improved the meta description to echo the questions and answer promise. After requesting indexing we watched the query set shift. The page began earning clicks from long tail searches with higher engagement. That insight came directly from real search language instead of brainstorming in a room.

Align Copy to User Intent
One of the clearest wins I’ve had with Google Search Console was with a crypto compliance SaaS client. They had over 100 published content pieces but were getting minimal non-branded traffic. I pulled the Performance report and filtered for queries where they ranked between positions 6 and 15, the “almost there” zone. There were dozens of high-intent queries where the content existed but the pages weren’t structured to match what Google was surfacing.

We rewrote the H1s, added FAQ sections targeting the exact query phrasing, and tightened the internal linking from higher-authority pages. The data itself isn’t magic — GSC tells you where the opportunity is, but you have to diagnose why the page isn’t converting that impression into a click. Most teams skip the diagnosis and go straight to producing new content, when the answer is usually already sitting in their existing pages.

Expand Articles to Match New Queries
One way we’ve used Google Search Console successfully was by looking at queries where Google thought our content was relevant, but the page itself didn’t fully answer the search. It’s a small signal most teams ignore, but it can reveal real content opportunities.
For example, we noticed one article for a SaaS client was getting impressions for searches about “CRM migration checklist,” even though the article was originally about general CRM setup. The Performance report showed the query appearing often with an average position around page two, which meant Google already saw a connection.
Instead of creating a new page, we expanded the article with a clear migration checklist section and reorganized the headings to match those search queries. Within a few weeks, that section started ranking on page one and began bringing in steady organic traffic.
What made the difference was treating Search Console like a content feedback tool, not just a ranking report. When Google keeps showing your page for a specific search, it’s often a sign that the answer is almost there, it just needs to be clearer.

Revamp Metadata to Lift Visits
One of the data points I analysed using GSC to improve my website’s SEO was CTR opportunity.
I filtered out queries where pages ranked between positions 4-10 but had high impressions and low CTR. This data indicated that visibility was present, but searchers weren’t interested in visiting the website.
I analysed the page title and meta description and realised they were quite generic. The title only mentioned the product name, while competitors’ SERPs highlighted key features like size options or specific colours.
Based on this data, I optimised the metadata to better match search intent and highlight buying triggers. The result was an improved CTR, and the page started attracting significantly more clicks.

Disavow Toxic Links to Recover Visibility
One of the ways we use Google Search Console (GSC) is to track our client’s daily impressions and clicks. Recently, one of our clients started to experience a dramatic 75% drop in impressions displayed in GSC over the second week of August 2025.
We conducted a site and code audit but did not find any malware or code-related issues. Then we conducted a backlink audit, by using the “latest link” feature in GSC, and found over 100 toxic backlinks from dozens of porn sites, which was probably a negative SEO attack by a competitor.
All the links had been created in July and were identified by GSC in August. We updated and resubmitted the Disavow file with all the new toxic backlinks on Monday, August 18th, and 8 days later the client site impressions were back to pre-August levels.
When I asked Google’s AI about whether disavowing links is still important for SEO, the reply I received was that disavowing toxic links is no longer required as Google understands what are good and bad links. But based on my experience, Google’s AI is 100% incorrect!

The Situation:

I dug into Google Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report and spotted the problem: their Cumulative Layout Shift scores were terrible because images didn’t have proper dimensions set. When I looked at the Performance report, pages with CLS issues had lost 60% of their clicks in three months.
We fixed the image dimensions and added lazy loading. Six weeks later, those pages climbed back up in rankings and organic traffic increased 47%. The lesson here: GSC shows you exactly what Google sees as broken, but you have to move quickly. Technical problems get harder to recover from the longer they sit. Prioritize Nonbranded Terms for Growth
One thing that changed how I approached GSC was when Google started clearly separating branded from non-branded queries. That single filter revealed something we’d been overlooking. Our growth numbers looked healthy, but they were propped up almost entirely by branded search. People who already knew us were finding us. The problem was everyone else.
Non-branded queries, the ones that actually bring in new business, were sitting there with solid impressions but poor click-through rates. We were showing up, just not compelling anyone to click. That’s a different problem than not ranking at all, and it requires a different fix.
Around the same time, I started paying closer attention to GSC’s AI-powered configuration insights. They flagged gaps I hadn’t prioritized, pages that were indexed but poorly matched to the non-branded intents they were supposed to serve. Not broken pages. Just underperforming ones that needed sharper focus.
So instead of spinning up new content, I went back to what we already had. I tightened the intent alignment on existing pages, cleaned up internal linking, so topical authority flowed where it needed to, and made sure each page answered one specific non-branded query well, rather than loosely targeting five. No new URLs. Just better ones.
Within a few months, we saw a measurable shift. More qualified first-time visitors, coming through non-branded paths, and less dependence on brand recognition to carry our organic numbers.
The lesson I keep coming back to: segment your data before you act on it. Branded traffic can make everything look fine while the real growth lever, non-branded discovery, sits neglected. GSC gives you the data to see this. You just have to look past the vanity metrics first.

Use Regex to Uncover Price Segments
There is a ton of hidden, actionable data in Google Search Console and a really good way to extract that is using REGEX. And it doesn’t have to be complicated. Usually just a case of copy and paste once you have the templates. I recently used the following REGEX to find opportunities for a marketplace website.
\b(under|below)\b
Using this, I was able to find a load of “X for Sale Under $5000” type terms where the main X page was ranking, but not that well. We created new sub-pages for these opportunities, and within a week, most of them were ranking 1st or 2nd and driving clicks.

Consolidate Cannibalized Pages to Boost Rankings
Here is a story about how our team used Google Search Console to fix keyword cannibalisation, and how we stumbled on this fix with a client. It’s one of those sneaky problems where the client thought things were fine – they wanted better rankings, but doesn’t everyone?
We used Search Console insights to discover Google was confused about which of several pages would be the best to show for the same mid-funnel keyword, so none of them ranked well. This was causing their CTR and impressions to be split. Our team figured this out by exporting query data and cross-referencing it at the page level. We eliminated the duplicate pages, and targeted the surviving canonical page for the query.
Two months later, this page shot up from position 14 to 7 and the keywords’ organic clicks tripled. Breaking up cannibalisation is something you can do with CSV exports of search console queries. It’s now part of our quarterly content audits for all our SME clients.

Close the Impression-to-Click Gap
GSC is built into our workflow at Enstacked. We check it every single day, analyzing what’s trending up, what’s trending down, and if something seems off, we take it up and fix it.
One example that comes to mind is our “React Carousel Libraries” blog. The post was getting a solid number of impressions, but the clicks just weren’t matching up. And the mistake most people make at this point is immediately rewriting the whole post. We didn’t. We went to the queries first.
There were similar queries that were getting a lot of impressions, but weren’t reflected in our blog at all. It also aligned with search intent. That’s when we knew that this needed fixing. That told us the post wasn’t irrelevant; Google was already vouching for it. The problem was that we were showing up for searches we weren’t fully answering.
We dug into the queries, looked at what people were actually searching, and realized the content wasn’t fully aligned with some of the relevant queries. So, we got to work, updated the title, rewrote the meta description, incorporated the right keywords naturally into the content, updated the H2, H3, and H4 tags, filled in sections that were clearly missing, and tightened the external as well as internal linking.
And the results? Impressions jumped from 130k to 470k, and clicks improved by nearly 50%. The post went from sitting on page three to ranking position one on Google.
The impression-to-click gap is honestly one of the most underused signals in GSC. It tells you Google already believes in your content, you just haven’t given searchers a strong enough reason to click. Fix that specific thing, and you’re not starting from scratch; you’re just closing a gap that was already halfway closed.

Refine Titles and Split by Purpose
I discovered a huge opportunity through Google Search Console by looking at our performance report for SERPpro three years ago. I saw we were getting impressions for “white label link building.” Our click-through rate for it was extremely low, at 2%. Our target rate for it should have been 8-10%. I saw we were on the first page for it, ranked between 6-8. The issue was our title did not include our target keyword. The queries section showed people were searching for “white label link building services” and “white label SEO partnerships.” These were much more specific than our target keyword. I changed our title and description to include both. I created a separate page for each as the intent for each search term was a bit different. For people searching for services, they wanted to know our pricing. For people searching for partnerships, they wanted to know our business model.
Within six weeks, our click-through rate for our target keyword improved to 12%. Our traffic for our target keyword improved by 180%. The best part is our average position improved from 7.2 to 4.1 as Google saw our results were a better match for our title.
The main point is Google Search Console is not only useful for checking what is working but also for checking what is almost working but needs a bit of a push.

Answer Specific Comparisons People Actually Search
Yeah so I run an independent review site for email marketing software. When I first launched it I did the obvious stuff, submitted the sitemap, requested indexing on the important pages through URL Inspection, made sure nothing was broken.
The bit that actually moved the needle came a few weeks later when I started looking at the Performance report. I had these comparison pages, like mailerlite vs brevo — and Google was showing them for searches I hadn’t even thought about. People were searching things like “mailerlite vs brevo for small business” or “mailerlite or brevo if I’m a beginner.” Longer, more specific queries.
So I went back and added sections to those pages specifically answering the question from a small business angle, a beginner angle, that sort of thing. The pages were already sitting on page two or three for those terms, so Google was already half-interested. Giving it the content it was looking for just tipped things over.
Honestly the biggest thing with Search Console is checking what queries are generating impressions but not clicks. That gap between “Google thinks this page is relevant” and “nobody’s clicking it” is where all the quick wins are. Usually means your page is close but missing the specific thing the searcher wants.

Repair Sitemap to Accelerate Indexation
A few months ago, we were working with a new website that had difficulty getting its blog posts indexed. We checked Google Search Console and noticed there was a sitemap status error.
When we saw that error, we regenerated and configured their sitemap properly, manually inspected and fetched top post URLs, and resubmitted the sitemap to Google. Resubmission was successful. Now, their blog posts have been discovered by Google, and we expect them to be indexed shortly.
Without Search Console, we wouldn’t have had this level of visibility into why their posts weren’t indexing as quickly as expected. Since they have dozens of in-depth posts, this was a massive win. Every single one of their posts is a source of traffic, feeding more leads into their pipeline.

Speed Up Mobile and Resolve Crawl Errors

I use GSC on a daily basis to optimise my clients’ websites as well as mine. To me, it’s the most powerful tool for SEOs, because it gives you access to first-party data. I used it for instance for blog performance analysis. This gives me great insights on what pages to optimise, for which queries, and the estimated demand I could leverage. One day while working on one of my sites, I identified a page with high potential. I optimised it, completely restructured the content, and within a few weeks increased its traffic by ten! Resubmit Lost URLs and Favor Long Form
Below I am going to share how I get my website on ranking track using Google Search console.
1. On Google Search console Dashboard there is section of indexing. On the issue section under indexing you see a issue name “Crawled – currently not indexed”. This is the very important point for old pages that you haven’t updated or submitted to index. These pages get de-indexed and Google stop crawling these pages. The ranking keywords you may get from these pages disappears.
It’s important to keep checking these pages and if the pages are listed on above issue submit them for indexing again.
My 5 blog pages and 1 service page was not ranking because of this issue. I resubmitted and the benefits I saw are following:
– Those pages started ranking for few keywords even the ranking is not number 1 but they were under 100 which is good.
– Images of those pages also started ranking for your target keywords.
– Search console also detected internal linking from those pages. It’s like reviving a dead part of body.
2. Second is performance section. I analysed what kind of content quickly start getting ranking and on how many keywords. I created short content and long content.
– Short content took few days to start ranking on target keywords and the keywords they started ranking on are not very related.
– I started writing long form content with same writing style and they started getting ranked from next day and on more high intent keywords.
Conclusion: I realised Google prefer long form content practically even if it’s written from AI but the content should be well structured. Your content can start ranking on 5-10 target keywords under 100 position from the next day.
Google search console have been real help when it’s more about your site’s content, and technical issues. It address issues in real time and provide updated data in real time. Where tools like ahrefs and SEMRush take around a week or more to show the keywords you are ranking on and the backlinks you got, GSC start showing everything from next day.

Leverage Performance and Referral Data for Strategy
In my opinion, Google Search console’s data is one of the most reliable organic data you can have. There are two sections which helped me the most, performance tab and link section, you can also count pages tab.
1. Performance tab is most helpful feature of Google search console. Here you can check your website’s performance, its position, CTR, queries etc. You just have to analyze that data. Here’s how I did on my website. I copy everything on performance tab and paste it to Grok or chatgpt and say them to “analyze this data. Give me actionable steps to improve my website’s ranking, CTR, & customer satisfaction” This data is gold.
2. Google search console also shows link. You can say it’s backlinks. Here you can see external and internal links which is very important off-page signal.
These 2 tabs are most important in Google search console. These features helped me to rank my website on top 3 on very competitive keywords. You can try above strategy to see the results yourself.

Strengthen Semantics and Credibility for Discovery
As a digital marketing agency, this is one of the avenues we specialize in. We take a look at our clients’ websites and make SEO changes with the help of Google Search Console to improve website visibility, user traffic, and improve the quality of each user.
For SEO, the biggest things to look at are keywords, building brand authority through things like blog posts and content alignment, and (especially now) making sure that your website is citable with AI models. We have seen measurable results through citations like press releases, as well as general brand alignment. If you have unaligned messaging, LLMs will have a hard time understanding what your business is about, which leads them to not bring you up in response to prompts.

Rework Snippets Based on Market Demand

Control Facets and Guide Bots
We discovered an indexing gap that was limiting our organic growth. Search Console showed a spike in pages marked as “Crawled currently not indexed” and “Discovered currently not indexed.” We reviewed the affected URLs and found most were thin pages created by faceted navigation. These pages used crawl budget while stronger pages were refreshed less often.
We adjusted internal linking so filtered variants were no longer promoted from main pages. We added noindex to low-value combinations and combined similar pages into a single canonical page with clearer content. We also improved XML sitemap quality by only submitting pages we wanted indexed. After that we monitored crawl stats and coverage trends weekly and saw faster recrawling on priority pages and more consistent indexing.

Restore Core Keyword in the H1
Soon after the December 2025 core update, I noticed that my site traffic started to decline. I used a simple position tracking approach inside Search Console to find the biggest opportunity for recovery.
First, I used the comparison feature to analyze performance before and after the drop. I looked closely at impressions, clicks, and average position for my main keywords. While reviewing the data, I noticed something very strange. A keyword that was previously ranking in the top three positions had suddenly dropped below position twenty.
I was surprised because the page had been stable for a long time.
My first step was to tweak and slightly expand the content on that page. I improved a few sections and added more context. Then I waited. After two weeks, there was no improvement. In fact, some of the related LSI keywords for that page also started to drop in rankings.
At that point, I decided to investigate more carefully.
I compared the current version of the page with an older version that had previously ranked in the top three. During this review, I discovered a major mistake. During a routine content update, our core keyword had been removed from the H1 heading.
That small change weakened the page’s topical signal.
I quickly restored the keyword in the H1 and republished the page. Then I waited again.
Within a short time, the page started climbing back toward its original ranking!
