In this changing landscape, Dr. George Douglas Lunsford, MA, PhD, has made it his mission to stay ahead of the curve.
As chief executive officer of Tutor With The Best and co-founder of Strategic Synergy Consulting Group, Dr. Lunsford blends academic rigor with real-world relevance. He has built a career around the belief that success comes from following your own path and helping others do the same.
A Passion for Making Learning Practical
Dr. Lunsford’s academic foundation runs deep. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1998, a master’s in clinical psychology in 2001 and a Doctor of Philosophy in research measurement and evaluation in 2009, all from the University of South Florida. “My PhD is the highlight of my career,” he said. “It allowed me to specialize in statistics and research design, which I use every day in my work.”
Dr. Lunsford began his career teaching as an adjunct professor at USF from 1998 to 2001 and returned as a visiting professor from 2009 to 2015. He also taught at Keiser University from 2013 to 2018. “I’ve always had a knack for making complicated concepts feel simple,” he said. “And I try to make people feel like they succeeded because of their efforts.”
Through his work, Dr. Lunsford developed the Study Anxiety Inventory, a diagnostic tool to assess academic stress. He also served as a contracted research and statistics consultant for over 20 years.
Building a Business Around Empowerment
In 1998, Dr. Lunsford founded Tutor With The Best, based in Oldsmar, Florida. “I stay hands-on,” he says. “I don’t just lead, I participate. That’s what helps us maintain quality.” He plans to expand the company’s base of over five tutors within the next three to five years, while maintaining his involvement at the core of the mission.
Now, Dr. Lunsford is setting his sights on corporate training through Strategic Synergy Consulting Group, a new firm he co-founded with a multi-PhD holder. “We want to offer practical courses in AI, business statistics, and human resources. We’ll help clients build their resumes and even their businesses.”
Addressing Today’s Challenges in Education
Dr. Lunsford stays alert to shifts in learning technology. “You can now ask a computer a question and get an answer, but only if you phrase it right,” he explains. “That’s where people need training: in asking better questions.”
Dr. Lunsford also advocates for using AI in schools: “Kids are being punished for using it, but institutions need to evolve. AI isn’t cheating, it’s a tool. Those who don’t get on board will be left behind.”
Recognized for Excellence
Marquis Who’s Who recently named Dr. Lunsford a top educator, highlighting his achievements in teaching, research, and entrepreneurship. He is also certified as a circuit civil and family mediator by the Florida Supreme Court. “That training helps me understand people better and resolve conflicts,” he states.
Dr. Lunsford remains an active member of the Florida Educational Research Association and continues to contribute to conversations in education and data analysis.
A Life Rooted in Creativity and Gratitude
Born in Tampa, Dr. Lunsford now lives in Oldsmar, Florida. He is the father of four and finds joy in playing guitar and singing. “Music gives me a creative outlet that balances out my analytical work.”
Dr. Lunsford also credits much of his growth to mentors. “The late Dr. Charles Spielberger and my PhD adviser, Dr. Robert Dedrick, both shaped who I am today,” he acknowledges.
Looking Forward: Teaching, Training, and Thinking Differently
Dr. Lunsford plans to keep growing Tutor With The Best and expand into corporate consulting through Strategic Synergy. “I’ve never worried about fitting in,” he notes. “If people disagree with my approach, I’ll take my talents where I can express myself fully. That’s how I found success, and it’s how I help others find it too.”
