Grit Daily's Leaders in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are crucial in driving innovation and business success. They influence decisions about where to work, what products to develop, and how to market them. Moreover, the benefits of workplace diversity are numerous and well-documented. Diverse companies are generally more profitable, showing better financial performance than their less diverse counterparts, and they also tend to be more productive, with inclusive teams making better business decisions and doing so more efficiently.

Workplace diversity is also essential for attracting and retaining top talent since many employees and job seekers consider diversity an important factor when evaluating companies and job offers. A sense of belonging at work significantly boosts job performance as well, enhancing overall productivity and morale. Inclusive decisions foster a more innovative environment, with diverse and inclusive workforces encouraging different perspectives and ideas that drive creativity and innovation.

However, there remains a significant gap in perception. While many executives believe their companies are highly diverse, a substantial portion of employees feel that their companies fall short in truly embracing diversity. This “diversity gap” highlights the ongoing need for companies to not only commit to diversity in theory but also to implement meaningful practices that promote an inclusive workplace culture.

Recognizing the importance of diversity, we have developed a methodology in partnership with EVG Media to determine the top workplaces for diversity, highlighting those championing diverse work forces and environments.

Our methodology for DEI excellence combined a qualitative assessment of publicly accessible data with a focus on three criteria: public and social presence, internal policies, and innovation in DEI. We evaluated companies’ engagement with DEI issues through press releases, news coverage, and social media activity, and analyzed internal hiring practices for inclusivity. Recognition from DEI bodies also played a crucial role in assessing innovation and leadership.

Our diverse list includes companies of various sizes, from less than a thousand to tens of thousands of employees, across multiple countries and industries. Notable awardees include Clorox, PENN Entertainment, Humana, Cognizant, and Bayer. These companies and the rest of those on the list were recognized for their robust and authentic engagement in promoting and implementing DEI practices, reflecting a genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion at all levels.

Methodology

When selecting workplaces for DEI excellence, Grit Daily relied on a qualitative assessment of publicly available information, ensuring that the evaluation was both accessible and verifiable. The algorithm was structured to meticulously analyze the depth, visibility, and frequency of each company’s DEI practices based on three main criteria: public and social presence, internal policies and practices, and innovation and leadership in DEI.

Public and Social Presence played a critical role, reflecting how actively a company engages with DEI issues in the public domain. Our approach involved scrutinizing press releases and news coverage from reputable sources for significant DEI-related announcements, such as the launch of new programs or achievements in DEI goals. Simultaneously, the company’s activity on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook was evaluated. The focus here was on posts, discussions, and content sharing that directly address diversity, equity, and inclusion. The frequency and depth of these engagements offer insights into the company’s commitment to promoting DEI openly.

Internal Policies and Practices focused on observable recruitment practices. Publicly available job postings and recruitment materials were examined for mentions of inclusivity and diversity-focused hiring practices. These elements serve as direct indicators of a company’s effort to foster an inclusive work environment and its dedication to building a diverse workforce.

Innovation and Leadership in DEI were assessed by identifying any high-profile awards or recognitions that the company has received from renowned DEI organizations or industry groups. These accolades are significant because they serve as third-party validation of the company’s DEI initiatives and achievements.

The companies were scored on a scale based on the robustness and authenticity of their public engagements, internal practices, and recognized achievements in DEI. The final selection was made by aggregating these scores, along with subject-expert analysis, to ensure a balanced evaluation that reflects both the internal and external manifestations of their DEI efforts.
