As venture capital pours into AI, climate tech, and mobility, one unassuming sector is quietly powering the future of cities: trenchless technology for water and sewer rehabilitation. The $1.2 trillion infrastructure problem, from crumbling pipes to decades-old water systems, is now being tackled by a new breed of engineering-led companies using robotics, coatings, and no-dig methods to reduce cost and disruption.

Houston-based The Vortex Companies is emerging as a leader in the trenchless technology space, and its latest string of promotions across the U.S. and Europe points to an ambitious plan: scaling its integrated platform globally to meet rising demand for smarter, faster infrastructure solutions.

Investing in Leadership to Accelerate Scale

Vortex recently announced three executive promotions aimed at strengthening operations across its platform. The moves include:

  • Chuck Parsons to senior vice president of strategy and operations.
  • Ryan Helmuth to regional vice president of its West Coast affiliate, Sancon Technologies.
  • Dan Watson to senior vice president and managing director of Vortex International, overseeing the company’s growth in the UK and Europe.

While it might sound like routine HR news, these promotions speak to something bigger: a trenchless technology infrastructure company with tech DNA, scaling across borders and doubling down on operational excellence.

“Over the past five years, we’ve taken a deliberate and strategic approach to our UK and European expansion,” said Ryan Graham, Chief Operating Officer, Vortex Companies. “Through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions, we now have the platform in place to deliver a broad portfolio of solutions tailored to this region’s infrastructure challenges…”

Regarding the promotion of Watson to Vortex International, Vortex CEO Mike Vellano commented, “Dan has deep roots in this industry and a unique understanding of both the service and product sides of our business. Having helped grow the McAllister Group, Dan has what it takes and is an exceptional leader who knows how to scale a business, inspire teams, and attract top talent.”

Trenchless Tech: Infrastructure’s Quiet Disruptor

Trenchless technology refers to no-dig methods for repairing underground pipes, using liners, robots, and UV curing systems instead of traditional excavation. For cities and utilities, that means less disruption, faster timelines, and lower costs.

Vortex operates in both services and manufacturing, producing specialty mortars, polymeric coatings, UV curing systems, and CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) liners, while also installing them through an expanding network of contractors and divisions. Its vertical integration mirrors platform plays in the tech world, allowing for agility and end-to-end control.

The trenchless technology company has completed 15 acquisitions since its founding in 2015 and now operates across 29 global locations, offering both trenchless products and turnkey services.

New Roles Signal a Shift Toward Platform Integration

Parsons, previously president of Sancon Technologies, brings decades of field experience and a strong track record to his new corporate role. He will now lead enterprise-level strategy, drive operational alignment, and oversee CIPP Corp, the company’s liner installation network.

“Chuck’s no-nonsense approach, combined with his ability to consistently deliver high-quality services in California’s highly competitive market, makes him an ideal fit for this position,” said Vellano.

Helmuth, promoted to take over leadership at Sancon, brings 15 years of experience with the company. He will oversee day-to-day operations and focus on expansion across the West Coast, reporting to B.J. Kerstiens, senior vice president of Vortex Services.

“Chuck and Ryan have each made a lasting impact on Sancon’s success,” added Vellano. “Their promotions reflect our investment in leadership continuity, building a strong internal culture, and our goal to keep growing with the people who helped get us here.”

Expansion Abroad: Why Dan Watson’s Move Matters

The promotion of Dan Watson, based in the UK, points to Vortex’s growing footprint in Europe’s water infrastructure market. Watson, who previously served as managing director of the McAllister Group, will now oversee Vortex International operations in the UK and mainland Europe.

He brings over two decades of experience and a deep understanding of trenchless rehab technologies, including UV lining, robotics, and CIPP.

“What drew me to the trenchless industry — and keeps me motivated — is the constant opportunity to apply innovation to real-world challenges. No two projects are ever the same, and that’s what makes our work so dynamic and rewarding,” added Watson. “I’m honored to take on this new role and help lead Vortex’s continued international growth. With the right people, proven technologies, and a shared vision, we’re redefining how critical infrastructure is renewed across the globe.”

Since 2019, Vortex has expanded its international footprint through strategic investments, including the launch of Vortex Europe and the acquisition of several top-tier technology and service firms such as Fleer-Tech GmbH (now Vortex Services GmbH), ETECAS UV Technology in Germany, and Lining Division Ltd. and McAllister Group in the UK and Ireland.

A Platform Model for Infrastructure Renewal

As cities grapple with rising costs, water scarcity, and climate-driven infrastructure strain, companies like Vortex are quietly becoming mission-critical. Its latest leadership moves suggest a company gearing up for global scale, positioning itself not just as a trenchless tech provider, but as the backbone of a smarter, more sustainable infrastructure future. Trenchless technology may not command headlines like AI or EVs, but its impact is concrete, scalable, and urgently needed.

What sets Vortex apart is its platform model, offering everything from robotic systems and custom resin formulations to full-scale installation and field support. It’s not just repairing pipes; it’s creating a replicable system for infrastructure renewal on a global stage.

The promotions of Parsons, Helmuth, and Watson aren’t just internal milestones. They’re strategic signals, prioritizing continuity, deep operational knowledge, and the kind of leadership needed to drive growth through integration and geographic expansion.
