Power Actor Michael Rainey Jr Gets Over 300 Death Threats On Social Media

Published on January 24, 2020

You thought Game of Thrones fans were bad? They got nothing on Power’s. The Starz series has been known for creating passionate emotions with their compelling story plots. That still doesn’t excuse the fans for taking it too far. Such as to entice fans to send Power actor Michael Rainey Jr more than 300 death threats via social media simply because of rumors that his character shot Ghost.

The Breakdown

Ghost, played by actor Omari Hardwick, was gunned down in his nightclub during the mid-season finale last year, giving birth to the viral start of the #WhoShotGhost hashtag movement. In this fiction world some characters have been ruled out, such as Dre and Tommy. As a result, many believe Ghost’s son, Tariq, might be the culprit. The theory got worse, or better, when a video was leaked (another leak) online allegedly painting Tariq as the shooter.

In the video, Tariq holds a gun and says, “I can’t go back.” Ghost replies, “Hey, son, I love you, OK?” And then Tariq pulls the trigger. Again, this is a show. Nevertheless, online leaks are taken seriously, which is why the video was taken down for various reasons such as copyright infringement. Soon after that, Rainey posted a selfie with a confused look and the caption, “Me going through my dms tryna figure out why I have 326 death threat messages.”

His co-stars seem to be having fun with this selfie. Since Naturi Naughton, who plays his mother and Ghost’s wife, Tasha, commented on the post with two laughing and two facepalm emojis. LaLa Anthony, known as Lakeisha Grant in the show, also commented with numerous face palm emojis. The only thing this tells me is that those death threats have no validation whatsoever. Even though we understand this is merely a show, sites such as Complex claim that it might have been 50 Cent‘s fault.

Maybe He Leaked His Own Video?

The rapper, who created the TV show with Courtney Kemp, leaked several endings over the past days to confuse eager fans about who shot Ghost. Tariq already hates his father, so it only make sense for 50 Cent to make people believe he did it. Smart, but it doesn’t excuse death threats. Especially since there is the possibility that Rainey didn’t know what was going on, as 50 Cent has the tendency to just act sometimes on his own.

There Were Other Theories.

In November of 2019, Naughton spoke with reporters from Page Six. She explained that she could understand why her character was a suspect herself in shooting the leading man. She stated that it was perfectly understandable because she did so much for him, and he still betrayed her and Tariq. Nevertheless, there were no death threats made to neither the actress nor her character. So the only difference now is evidence that may not even be evidence.

A Spin-off Is On The Works.

The series is coming to an end, which is why fans are anxious to know shot Ghost; Tariq/Rainey being to blame does offer some closure before time. Once the end arrives, fans will have more to look forward to since a spin-off adaption titled Power Book II will arrive with Mary J. Blige as the lead. Blige said:

“This is probably the most exciting thing that’s going to happen to me this year. I’ve been a fan of ‘Power’ since the very beginning and I want to thank Courtney Kemp and 50 Cent for starting this conversation with me.”

As happy as we are to see Mary J. Blige with more screen time, one cannot help but wonder if she will be safe from future death threats.
