Healthcare technology and manufacturing is a dynamic field that requires embracing change and tackling challenges head-on. Compliance with global quality and regulatory standards is necessary for companies selling products across worldwide markets. Paul A. Arrendell, the chief quality officer at Jabil Healthcare, has a stellar track record of helping companies comply with such regulatory requirements. Arrendell has excelled at establishing relationships with industry action groups and strategizing and interacting with customers. His hard work, adaptability, and people skills have contributed to the success of many healthcare companies launching new products and designs that enhance the quality of life for patients.
A Pivot Launches a New Career
Arrendell earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1988. During his undergraduate studies, he participated in the university’s co-op program, working as a design and manufacturing engineer within the semiconductor industry. He pursued a master’s degree in mechanical engineering to deepen his expertise in automatic feedback control systems, earning a Master of Science from his alma mater in 1991.
Arrendell entered the workforce with the US Department of Energy through the Department’s Management Intern Development Program. He then followed his roots in automation, working as a design engineer for automated systems assembly of microprocessors. His desire for varied work experience led him to the automotive sector, designing automated manufacturing lines for air handling systems for both car and large truck manufacturers. He then made an unexpected career pivot.
One day, Arrendell saw a job listing from Abbott Diagnostics and reflected on his past interest in biomedical engineering prior to graduate school. He took a leap of faith, submitted his resume, and landed a manufacturing and quality engineering role. This transition marked the official start of his illustrious 27-year medical technology career experience.
Arrendell oversees quality and regulatory operations at Jabil Healthcare and helps maintain compliance with international standards. As a chief quality officer, he has a reputation for developing relationships with regulators across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia.
Success as a Servant Leader
In 2022, Arrendell garnered recognition for his contributions to the medical technology sector. The Wall Street Journal featured him as a Top Professional. In 2022, he was the guest speaker at the spring commencement of the College of Engineering at his alma mater, The University of Texas at Arlington. Additionally, the Health Technology Report cited him among the Top 25 Healthcare Leaders in San Antonio, Texas.
Arrendell credits his success to his ability to connect with people. He aspires to what he calls a “servant leadership mentality.” This mindset emphasizes creating an environment that supports people to succeed just as much as you, or even more — putting others first through listening, empathy, and healing. “I always think about what I can do to help people further their career and expertise and solve problems in a way that establishes trust and helps with the greater good,” he explains.
Industry Insights for the Future
Arrendell keeps his finger on the pulse of emerging industry trends. For instance, injectable drugs for type 2 diabetes are popular for weight loss. Meanwhile, many consumers seek a weight loss pill. “That’s coming because someone is going to develop an oral delivery method with a potency that is sufficient to assist in weight loss,” he says.
“People don’t like having to go to the hospital, so they’d rather do what they could at home and within their control,” he adds. As a result, over-the-counter glucose monitors will be another area for people to be informed about their overall health.
Over the years, particularly in Europe, Arrendell has observed that market feedback often revealed increased risk in products currently on the market. This insight has led to more rigorous testing and detailed submissions for products seeking market approval from global government and regulatory entities.
A Never-Ending Pursuit to Make an Impact
In the next five years, Arrendell has no plans to retire. He’s eager to stay active by serving on corporate boards and continuing to be a though leader in the industry. He feels he can add value to companies through sharing lessons he has learned to help fuel growth and to improve designs. Arrendell’s dedication, collaborative efforts, and servant-leadership style will likely continue to influence advancements in healthcare.
