The retail and manufacturing industries are constantly changing due to global competition, technological advancements and shifting consumer demands. Professionals in these fields must manage complex supply chains and meet evolving market needs.
With more than three decades of experience, Mitchell D. Finkelstein has been at the forefront of these industries while helping major U.S. brands navigate these complexities.
Building a Foundation in Retail and Sourcing
Finkelstein’s relationship with manufacturing and retail began in the late 1970s with Brittania and kicked into high gear once he moved to Hong Kong in 1979. “I really enjoyed working in the retail industry because I found it challenging to match product quality with customer expectations,” he recalls.
Expanding Macy’s in China
A standout moment in Finkelstein’s career came during his time at Macy’s in 1980. He was crucial in Macy’s expansion into China and Southeast Asia, regions that were just beginning to open to international business following the Cold War.
“The highlight of my career was being one of the few individuals present at the beginning of China’s opening to international business,” Finkelstein explains. His work helped increase Macy’s shipments in Asia from $50 million to nearly $400 million on a Freight on Board (FOB) basis. Other accomplishments on Macy’s behalf have included his work opening direct buying offices in Taiwan, Singapore, and India, and overseeing the purchasing of office space and garment quotas in Hong Kong. Additionally, he was responsible for developing private labels for Macy’s, including Charter Club, Club Room, Alfani, and I.N.C. After leaving Macy’s in 1993, Finkelstein founded Wisetex Trading Ltd., which focuses on sourcing and manufacturing in Asia.
Throughout his career, Finkelstein has ensured efficient production and delivery for top U.S. brands like Aeropostale, Fossil, and Abercrombie & Fitch, working for these companies later in his career, following his time with Macy’s.
“I’ve always enjoyed being part of organizations that allow me to apply my knowledge and contribute to their growth,” Finkelstein shares. His leadership at Wisetex Trading Ltd. has been key to its success over the years.
A Key Role at American Eagle Outfitters
In 2013, Finkelstein took on a new challenge as managing director at American Eagle Outfitters in Hong Kong. There, he oversaw sourcing operations and helped grow the company’s presence in Asia.
“I was fortunate to help steer the company’s strategic direction during a critical period,” he reflects. His expertise in managing sourcing operations played a significant role in strengthening the brand’s market position.
Adapting to Industry Changes
Finkelstein prides himself on his ability to embrace change: “I’m still a very competitive person. I like the idea of change and trying to adapt to change.” He believes that the future of retail lies in online business and predicts that traditional shopping malls will experience a decline.
“In ten years, there will be 40% to 50% fewer malls in the U.S.,” Finkelstein says. “The major ones are not going anywhere, but people are moving away from shopping and malls.”
Looking Ahead: Simplifying the Supply Chain for Small Businesses
Finkelstein plans to create a U.S.-based business that connects Asian manufacturers directly with retailers. “I want to create an online platform to sell products directly from Asia to small stores and individual customers,” he explains.
This initiative aims to simplify the supply chain and make international trade more accessible for small businesses.
A Family-Focused Visionary
Outside of work, Finkelstein enjoys spending time with his family. A proud father of a son and daughter, he is determined to balance his lofty professional goals and his family life.
