Driven by a purpose to serve the greater good, Michael Emil Shafik is a distinguished professional and expert in the technology and automotive industries. Shafik’s innovation and creativity are evident in the significant contributions he has made while leading technology companies. Since 2023, he has been the staff technical product manager and staff technical program manager at Tesla, where he drives the vision and execution of various products, optimizes production processes, and manages supply chains.

About Shafik

Shafik’s academic background set the foundation for his professional success. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with a specialization in mechatronics, robotics, and automation engineering in 2005 from Assiut University. Additionally, in 2010, he received a Master of Science in architectural engineering with a focus on controls and energy management from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Shafik’s education is complemented by several product management certificates from Product School, obtained in 2023, and multiple programming certifications from Schneider Electric, Honeywell, and Tridium.

Earlier in his career, Shafik was a lead systems engineer, business partner, and board member at Building System Solutions LLC. During his tenure, he collaborated with partners on a project for the Omaha Public Power District, which prompted them to sponsor his visa and green card. This enabled him to become a full-time partner, and he was recognized as the company’s best employee for three consecutive years. From 2015 to 2017, he served as an automation engineer II at Schneider Electric, where he was responsible for developing advanced control systems.

Shafik held several key positions at Meta between 2017 and 2023. He joined the company as a controls subject matter expert before advancing to program manager and later to senior program manager roles. At Meta, he reached a notable career milestone when he developed a machine learning platform designed to optimize energy and water efficiency for telecommunications and cooling systems.

Notable Contributions to the Industry

Shafik has made significant contributions to his industry through various written works, including his authorship of “Performance of a Coupled Cooling System with Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger and Solar Chimney,” published by Renewable Energy. Additionally, he wrote “A Comparison of Passive Solar and Mechanically Driven Earth-to-Air Heat Exchangers for Cooling Buildings,” which was featured in the World Renewable Energy Forum.

Shafik stays current with changes in the field by remaining active in industry-related organizations, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

Beyond the Profession

In his personal time, Shafik is passionate about mentoring college students to help them succeed in their careers. He hopes to inspire them by sharing his own experiences and challenges, believing that one can achieve their goals with perseverance and dedication.

Shafik attributes much of his success to his upbringing. His father found innovative ways to help him adapt to life with a disability and tackle the challenges he faced with intelligence and motivation. His father’s unwavering belief in him motivated him to succeed, and he was determined from a young age to excel academically. These early life experiences were inspiring to Shafik, and he took away two key lessons from them: that every individual is unique and deserves opportunities and that no challenge is insurmountable. Although challenges remain, he is confident that his father is proud of his achievements and is determined to continue being a source of pride for his family.

Another factor in Shafik’s success has been his faith, which has greatly influenced his understanding of leadership and his ability to support those around him.

Shafik’s other personal interests include kayaking, hiking, and spending time with his wife and daughter. Looking to the future, he aims to become the chief technology officer of a major company, such as Meta or NVIDIA.
