A seasoned professional at a major petroleum company and a former senior manager at Amazon, Arjun Kulshreshtha is no stranger to persevering toward higher aspirations. Over a fourteen-year career, he has developed resilience into a superpower.

Arjun Kulshreshtha, a supply chain expert, is a senior manager at ShipMonk, helping transform how companies think about supply chain agility. Having moved from the petroleum industry into senior management at Amazon, Kulshreshtha’s career has been a lesson in adaptability.

A first-generation master’s graduate and the first in his family to emigrate to the United States, Kulshreshtha has made adversity a superpower. Born to a single mother, Kulshreshtha was raised by his mother and grandmother, both teachers. Numbers were his playground and humility and respect his pillars. Born in the small town of Agra, many of Kulshreshtha’s school friends are still in the city. Kulshreshtha is one of two from his high school class and one of three from his undergrad to make it to the US.

Beginnings of an E-commerce Specialist

Transitioning from India to the US was a significant adjustment for Kulshreshtha. A different system, language, and broader cultural context to learn presented a challenge, but his determination led him to persevere, giving him an adaptability he calls “difficult to teach.”

Further, he says, “If you come from a non-traditional background, lean into it; it is your unfair advantage. To give you examples, a lot of my interviews revolved around how I managed my teams during high stress situations like combating a petroleum refinery fire or working with local administration during a civil unrest that led to a curfew”

Kulshreshtha earned his Bachelor of Science in Electronics & Communications Engineering from Allahabad University. He was then selected to the HPCL Graduate Program through a 4-step process that included a national entrance exam and a panel interview led by the company’s board. This program selected 125 candidates from a pool of around 150,000 applicants.

At HPCL, India’s second-largest petroleum company, he drove transformational infrastructure. The petroleum industry was not the easiest to enter early in a career. Kulshreshtha faced the arduous process of innovating in a traditional, hierarchical industry. Institutional resistance to change was the norm for him, and while navigating the social challenges, he also faced industry-specific issues.

The HPCL project he worked on was an analytics model that required technical expertise and stakeholder management with an International Joint Venture (HMEL – Hindustan Mittal Energy Limited). Kulshreshtha worked on proactive supply chain planning and improved throughput of 52% of the pipeline network by 8%. He engaged and connected refinery throughput planning with downstream pipeline capacity and terminal outages to drive meaningful growth to the regional economy.

After HPCL, he joined Amazon through its highly selective Pathways Operations Leadership Program. This launched Kulshreshtha into the retail supply chain.

E-commerce Specialization and Supply Chain Excellence

Now in retail supply chain, operations, and technology domains, Kulshreshtha leads B2B transformation at ShipMonk. He draws on his roots to innovate in the industry, using his resilience to continue pushing for more, scale more effectively, and lead with vision.

Kulshreshtha’s philosophy is rooted in Japanese philosophy of Mottainai (もったいない): Often translated as “what a waste” or “don’t be wasteful,”  He says, “Many leaders prioritize hiring first; I have learned that clarity of vision and ruthless prioritization create the conditions for healthy, sustainable growth.”

Through ruthless prioritization, Kulshreshtha has twice been promoted to senior manager in his 14-year career. But ruthlessness does not appear to apply to his approach to innovation, a field he returns to repeatedly throughout his career.

On innovation, Kulshreshtha says, “Innovation lives in the margins. The best ideas often come from people closest to the pain point. Creating psychological safety for frontline teams to speak up is a competitive advantage most organizations underutilize.”

He demonstrates an understanding that, although he is trusted and has developed the skill to effect change, he is not always the one who knows what needs to change. With this knowledge, Kulshreshtha wisely looks to those who understand firsthand.

A Future in Supply Chain Management

Over the next five years, Arjun Kulshreshtha aims to become a leader and trusted advisor in supply chain transformation, developing himself into a professional that companies may turn to when they need to rethink their operating model for the digital age.

He seeks to help small and medium businesses scale their supply chain and adopt B2B transformation, a purpose he is already making strides towards.

Outside of supply chain development, Kulshreshtha hopes to publish a book on scaling operations leadership without losing culture or quality and to create a mentorship program for first-generation professionals from underrepresented backgrounds.

He says that his ultimate aspiration is “to be known not just for what I have built, but for the leaders and systems I have helped develop.”
