Family law plays a crucial role in shaping the lives of individuals and families by addressing issues that affect the emotional well-being and the financial future of the parties and their children. As society’s dynamics change, legal professionals must adapt accordingly.
Jason L. Hurst, JD, has dedicated more than 16 years to providing legal services in family law. He has helped hundreds of clients navigate complex legal matters with integrity and professionalism. While some people join the legal profession for its potential financial rewards, Hurst serves his clients because he cares for them.
An Early Passion for Law and Helping People
Hurst began his academic journey in 2005 when he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Grand Valley State University. His undergraduate education provided a solid foundation for his future legal career. “I was always drawn to the legal field because of the opportunity to help people in times of uncertainty,” he said.
He went on to earn a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University-Bloomington Maurer School of Law in 2009, where he laid the foundation for what would become an accomplished legal career. Hurst was admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois in 2009. After more than a decade of litigation experience, Hurst decided to also lend his talents to the arena of alternative dispute resolution. In 2022, he received his mediation training and certification at Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation.
A Flourishing Legal Career
Hurst’s career in family law began in 2010 at Beermann LLP (then Beermann Swerdlove LLP) in Chicago, where he practiced for five years. During his tenure there, he built a reputation for his thorough approach and steadfast dedication to his clients. While at Beermann, he had the pleasure of representing numerous celebrities, professional athletes, entertainers, and pillars of Chicago’s business and civic communities. “I learned that to succeed in this field, you must treat every case as unique and invest the necessary time to understand every detail,” he reflects.
In 2015, he joined Harrison LLP (then Harrison & Held, LLP), where his skills and work ethic quickly earned him promotion to partner in 2016, after having spent less than 24 months at Harrison and less than seven years practicing law. As a partner, Hurst oversees all aspects of case strategy, from the discovery phase through trial. His Family Law practice focuses on divorce, child support, visitation, custody, and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.
Hurst describes his motivation for thoroughly investigating every case while working closely with his clients: “My goal is to provide the best possible representation and help my clients find the best solutions for their families.”
Recognition and Achievements
Hurst has received several accolades for his expertise and dedication to the practice of family law. He has been named a Super Lawyer by Illinois Super Lawyers Magazine and a Leading Lawyer by Leading Lawyers Network multiple times. In 2021, he earned the distinction of being included in Best Lawyers in America by Best Lawyers. His most current recognition is inclusion in the prestigious Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes.
The secret to his success? Hurst insists that hard work and perseverance have fueled his achievements. He adds, “There is no substitute for putting in the time and energy to learn your craft. I dedicate myself to becoming better every day.”
A Commitment to Community
In addition to his legal career, Hurst is deeply involved in community service. He previously served as the board vice president for A Night Out Inc., an organization that served women victims of domestic violence. Additionally, he was recently appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness, where he interviews applicants to the Illinois bar. He also frequently mentors college and law students who are aspiring lawyers.
“I believe it’s important to give back to the community and help others who are facing challenges,” Hurst said.
Looking Forward: Expanding His Practice While Serving More Clients
Most recently, Hurst added personal injury and civil rights litigation to his practice to expand his fight for social and legal justice. He is passionate about providing justice for the injured and aggrieved victims of personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice, and civil rights violations.
“I’m focused on continuing to serve my clients, ensuring their needs are met and contributing to the future of family law and personal injury,” he said.
