Victims of crimes need the support of those who can advocate for them. In the judicial system, that role falls into the hands of prosecutors like Eric M. Hoffman, JD. As the prosecuting attorney for the 46th Judicial Circuit of Indiana, he supervises a team of 40 professionals while personally handling cases ranging from child homicides to cold case murders. Throughout his career, Hoffman has fought to protect victims with a strong sense of justice, compassion, and values that guide his work.
The Path to Discovering His Passion
Hoffman grew up in South Bend, Indiana, knowing he wanted a career in law but still working to determine his true passion. In 2000, he earned a Bachelor of Science after taking up a double major in criminal justice and criminology and legal assistance at Ball State University.
Three years later, Hoffman earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University Robert H, McKinney School of Law. He completed an internship during law school, setting him on the right career path.
As a certified legal intern, Hoffman argued his first jury trial. He successfully convicted a habitual offender in a firearms case. The victory opened his eyes to his true calling. Moving forward, Hoffman aimed to hold perpetrators accountable and obtain justice for victims.
A Forward-Thinking Champion for Justice
In his current role, Hoffman prosecutes some of the most horrific, violent cases. Resolving a 1993 cold case involving a contract killing was one standout moment in his career. Hoffman’s connection with law enforcement uncovered the chilling truth. A husband had hired a hitman to murder his soon-to-be ex-wife. Thanks to Hoffman’s dedication, the husband and the triggerman were convicted, bringing long-awaited closure to the victim’s family.
What’s interesting about Hoffman’s approach to solving cases is that he builds systems. He understands the importance of efficiency when it comes to dispensing justice. As a result, Hoffman established a High-Tech Crimes Unit and uses the E-Discovery cloud system. These innovations streamline case management and demonstrate his commitment to leveraging technology for greater accountability.
Impactful Motivations and Values
Hoffman is motivated by empathy for the victims. Believing in standing up for those who cannot protect themselves, he is dedicated to ensuring the legal system upholds and respects victims’ rights. He successfully prosecuted those responsible for the abuse and death of 5-year-old Lauren McConniel. These convictions garnered him recognition, such as becoming the finalist for the Person of the Year award through the Star Press in 2013 and receiving the Delaware County Prevent Child Abuse Award in 2012.
Hoffman attributes much of his success to support from his family and friends and the lessons learned from mentors and peers. Humility, kindness, and a willingness to learn from those around you are values he instills in his team and aspiring lawyers.
Advocacy That Makes a Difference
In the upcoming years, Hoffman plans to continue seeking justice and exploring unsolved murder cases. He is also considering writing a book to provide a window into the complexity of legal prosecution while honoring the lives of victims.
Hoffman remains in Delaware County, where he strives to protect the most vulnerable citizens. His ongoing advocacy for victims is a reminder that fighting for justice can make a lasting difference in people’s lives.
