Diane Fallier is an expert in computer networking and cybersecurity education. Since 2020, she has served as a professor and a coordinator of the Information Technology program with pathways for technical support and cybersecurity (previously called computer networking and cybersecurity networking) at Nashua Community College. With over 30 years of experience in the information technology sector, Fallier provides her students with the skills they need to get a foot in the door. Fallier develops curricula for information technology and cybersecurity courses and is currently looking to incorporate a course on digital forensics.
As technology advances, so too must Fallier’s class offerings. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, students are beginning to rely on these resources to complete assignments. It’s a major challenge in education—how does a teacher know whether an assignment was completed by a student and not AI? Fallier believes in mastering the basics and attributes her success to this foundation. Learning the next new thing isn’t for everyone, but there’s no getting around the fundamentals.
How an Education in Music Shifted to Computer Science
Fallier’s education began in music rather than information technology. She first earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of New Hampshire before continuing her pursuits at Southern Methodist University. During this time, Fallier worked at the computer center, where they provided short courses on the efficient operation of computer systems, which drove her interest not only in computer science, from which she earned a master’s degree, but also in education.
Fallier’s Career and Achievements
Before becoming a professor, Fallier began an extensive career in both information technology and instructional design. From 1995 to 2008, she served in roles ranging from technical support engineer to course developer at Sun Microsystems Inc. She went on to serve as the IT director at Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School from 2011 to 2013 and as a senior technical trainer at Demandware between 2013 and 2015. Following this period, Fallier worked as an information developer for Amazon Robotics from 2016 to 2019 and as an instructional designer for Kronos Incorporated from 2019 to 2020.
One of Fallier’s greatest achievements came during her time at Sun Microsystems Inc., during the release of the company’s proprietary operating system, Solaris 10. The release was a major upgrade, and she was entrusted with developing comprehensive training modules for the support team. This effort resulted in the production of 240 hours of training material, which the company relied on to train service personnel and customers. As a result of this and other efforts, Fallier was presented with an award for excellence.
Memberships and an Ever-Expanding Skill Set
Outside of her professional career, Fallier participates in a variety of activities and holds membership in several organizations. It is only natural, as she attributes much of her success to an ever-expanding skill set. Fallier is a member of American Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineers while also participating in the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hollis Town Band, and the Merrimack Valley Flute Choir. Beyond professional and hobby organizations, Fallier also participates in the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire.
Future Retirement
Looking toward the future, Fallier eagerly awaits her retirement. She has an immense fondness for being in front of the classroom, especially in an industry where e-learning has taken precedence, but still hopes to settle into a more comfortable period of life.
