On Saturday, fans of the long-time favorite animated sitcom series, The Simpsons, were hit with some pretty devastating news—the 32nd season could be the last.  And they took to social media expressing their disappointment. While not confirmed, the show’s composer, Danny Elfman (Spiderman), believes it to be the end, based off what he’s heard:

Well, from what I’ve heard, it is coming to an end, I don’t know for a fact, but I’ve heard that it will be in its last year,” Elfman, 66, shared with Joe.

Back in February, Fox (now merged with Disney), revealed that the show was renewed for its 32nd season, bringing the total episode count to 713. Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, every episode of The Simpson’s has been added to Disney’s new on-demand streaming platform, Disney+.

But even Elfman was surprised at how long the show has run for:

You have to realize, when I scored The Simpsons, I wrote this crazy piece of music, and I expected no one would hear it, because I really did not think the show had a chance in hell.”

Well boy was he taken for a ride. Created by Matt Groening in 1989, The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom and the longest-running American scripted prime-time television series with respect to seasons and number of episodes.

Despite the shock to fans, Elfman assured fans during San Diego Comic Con that they can most definitely expect a follow-up movie that would take place after the 2007 titular movie, The Simpsons Movie, spinning-off the show. Don’t think we forgot about Spider Pig.

No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days,” Elfman shared. “I think Disney wants something for its money.”
