According to a UN report, if recent U.S. funding cuts to global healthcare programs are not replaced, over 4 million people could die from AIDS-related causes by 2029. Not only that, but these same cuts could result in 6 million additional HIV infections within the next four years.
In response, (RED) this month announced a partnership with BASICS By Mychal, connecting self-care in two totally different worlds. This partnership will support (RED) in helping catalyze private-sector support of the Global Fund, which works to battle AIDS, as well as tuberculosis and malaria, worldwide.

(RED) was founded in 2006 by U2 lead singer Bono and activist Bobby Shriver to inspire people to activate their power as consumers in the fight to end AIDS. Since then, the NGO has partnered with iconic brands to create innovative (RED)-branded products and experiences, raising over $800 million to strengthen the health systems supporting the world’s most vulnerable populations.
BASICS By Mychal, founded by teen activist and actor Mychal-Bella Bowman, is a holistic skincare collection tailored for all. The mission-driven company offers unisex, cruelty-free, vegan professional skincare products, with a driving purpose to help save lives.
“Earlier this year, I was fortunate to take a trip to Kenya in Africa with (RED) to see hands-on the work that they do,” says Bowman, who starred in the Emmy-award winning series Underground Railroad. “That experience, being part of global outreach, impacted my life profoundly and encouraged me to contribute in any way that I can.”

Already a philanthropist, Bowman felt motivated to contribute to (RED)’s lifesaving mission. She decided to allot 50% of the proceeds from sales of her skincare line to support the organization’s efforts to end AIDS.
“Not only does this choice resonate with the mission of BASICS by Mychal, but I personally feel it is necessary and essential in today’s world. So much funding for AIDS research and medication has been eliminated in the past year. Now more than ever, we need to educate people about AIDS and provide as much financial assistance as we can in any way that we can,” Bowman states.
Money generated by BASICS by Mychal X (RED) goes to the Global Fund, where it supports critical programs that empower health workers and provide testing, treatment, and care in places where injustice has enabled pandemics to thrive.
“Funds have been cut,” Bowman says. “This has negatively affected people, and it upsets me. We need change. I am doing everything in my power to be that change.”
