Janene Elise Smith did not set out with a clear path to enter the financial field; initially, exploring law and business. However, accounting piqued Smith’s interest during college, leading her to earn a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Jacksonville State University, graduating cum laude in 2007. Her academic achievements include induction into Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor that recognizes her dedication to business education and practice.
Career Advancement in Corporate Finance
After completing her education, Smith’s professional career began in 2008 at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama LLC, where she started as an accounting co-op. Over the next 13 years, she advanced through various roles, such as cost accounting analyst, capital investment analyst and managerial reporting lead. Each of these roles provided her with opportunities to build expertise and financial processes. In the process, she also developed an in-depth understanding of operational challenges in corporate accountability.
In 2022, Smith joined Voya Financial as a GAAP reporting accountant for separate accounts before advancing to her current role as senior financial analyst within the BU Controllership Department. In this position, she manages quarterly and annual activities, focusing on process improvement and efficiency. Additionally, she also supports disclosures and financial statements that guide leadership decisions.
An Authentic Approach to Success
One of Smith’s key achievements at Voya involved developing a monthly profit and loss report for senior leadership and the chief operating officer. This project provided insight into financial planning and helped the leadership team make informed quarterly decisions. The responsibility also allowed her to collaborate with colleagues across the departments, reinforcing her commitment to teamwork.
Smith credits much of her success to remaining authentic in her career. Early on, she questioned whether it was possible to maintain her personal identity. “I’ve discovered and learned that maintaining my authentic sense of who I am while continuing to build my knowledge and executive presence helped me succeed,” she says. Moreover, this quality strengthens her ability to connect with colleagues.
Smith also values mentoring new team members, emphasizing helping them integrate into the organization. By coaching others, she passes along both technical expertise and an appreciation for integrity in financial work.
A Field in the Early Stages of AI Adoption
Finance and accounting are industries that demand precision. However, artificial intelligence is ushering in changes to the sectors. “The field is definitely incorporating AI technology into what we do,” Smith says.
Smith believes that integrating AI tools into financial processes holds promise. Nevertheless, this new development also requires caution. Companies must assess risks carefully to protect sensitive data and maintain compliance standards.
Smith also views the gradual incorporation of AI as improving accuracy and efficiency while respecting the responsibility to safeguard client information. “It’s definitely in the early stages of ensuring that we can implement the tools in a way that helps us do our job better while still preserving and mitigating that risk,” she says.
Leadership With a Mentorship Focus
With over 15 years of experience behind her, Smith continues to seek ways to broaden her knowledge. Over the next five years, she aims to expand her expertise across GAAP and statutory reporting. Additionally, she looks forward to taking on more process improvement and mentorship responsibilities. She sees opportunities to refine financial systems and guide colleagues as they develop their careers.
Outside of her professional commitments, Smith enjoys family time and traveling. These interests keep her grounded as she balances the demands of her role.
