The Razzie Awards are terrible. The Razzies, of course, being the boring tongue-in-cheek awards show for the worst movies of the year. For the most part, it’s just an on-the-nose way to remember the worst movies of the year. It’s just putting salt in the wound of a lot of filmmakers and performers. The awards show, which is technically called The Golden Raspberry Awards, is mostly a joke. How can we take any organization seriously that once nominated John Carpenter’s The Thing for worst-of-the-year awards? How wrong can a show get?
This year, the Razzie Awards was unable to put together an event due to the coronavirus. In years past, some actors have attended the show. Most famously, Halle Berry accepted her award, hammed it up, and had a great sense of humor about her win and Catwoman. Most actors probably don’t have that good of a sense of humor about it.
The winning loser at this year’s Raspberry Awards is, of course, Cats. Worst movies were released last year, but not as high-profile and disastrous as the adaptation of Cats. How much longer can we keep making fun of that movie? Probably until the end of the time, but still, the joke has grown tired about that disaster.
Two other notable losers at the awards show this year are Tyler Perry, who almost always wins at the box-office, and James Franco, whose nominations at the show were well-deserved. Franco released his little seen adaptation of the great “Zeroville” last year. Nobody saw it. From what critics have said, though, it’s definitely a Razzie movie. Franco deserves some knocks for turning that stunning book into another bad adaptation.
Hellboy and Serenity also got some hate, although the latter was at least an ambitious failure. It’s a wild, messy thriller, but hey, at least it tried something different. Again, sometimes the Razzie Awards picks on the wrong movies and filmmakers.
