Kevin Sherman is the head football coach of Ferrum College. He has had a long career coaching young people and is passionate about mentoring others and helping them achieve their life goals. For his expertise and contributions to collegiate coaching, Sherman was honored with inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who in June 2025.
A Football Coach’s Journey
After Sherman finished his own football career as a player, he shifted focus to coaching. His first coaching experience was as an assistant football coach at Ferrum College, the institution where he had earned a degree. Sherman would later leave that position to serve as a coach at multiple other universities and colleges, working with Hall of Fame coach Frank Beamer at one point at Virginia Tech. Sherman proceeded to work at Virginia Tech for seven years, which was not only an exciting time but a profound learning experience.
“I played in five ACC Championships and was on three winning ACC Championship teams. I competed and coached in three Orange Bowls, one Sugar Bowl, two Chick-fil-A Bowls and a Russell Athletic Bowl. I had a lot of great bowl games and a lot of excitement at a time when Virginia Tech was winning championships, and along with great players,” Sherman says.
Sherman continued to work at various academic institutions as an assistant coach, transitioning to administrative roles such as the director of player personnel and an offensive analyst.
Sherman returned to Ferrum College to be the head coach. Under his leadership, the team achieved a 5-5 record, an improvement over previous years. Sherman is determined to return the team to its winning streak, when it consistently won championships and regional championships. He is still growing and building a program at Ferrum College. In the upcoming season, the team will be moving up to Division II from Division III.
“It’ll be a tough, tall task. It’s a lot of fun to get the kids back out on the field and work alongside a good and young staff, six of whom are Ferrum alums. We really care about this place, and I think that’s important. We’re trying to win the Carolinas Conference Championship,” Sherman says.
The Future of Football
At Ferrum College, Sherman concentrates on the issues affecting the young people he coaches and their lives.
“We’re just here to provide an opportunity for young men to get an education and play football at the highest level that they can possibly play. But the goal is to make sure they get a degree. We just want people and young men to know that they have an opportunity here. I think Ferrum College is a place where you can enter with a promise and leave with a purpose,” Sherman says.
Finding success and achieving goals is about being a “good person, consistent, caring, loving and disciplined,” according to Sherman. Throughout his life, he has wanted to work with good people because, in helping each other, good things will happen. A major reason he returned to Ferrum College is that the director of athletics was a high school friend.
“It’s special to come back here full circle and do it with him again and try to get this place back to winning. But it’s just being around good people that work hard and are like-minded, that are faith-driven and want to continue to be change agents for the future,” Sherman says.
