Published on October 15, 2025

In hematology-oncology, research and treatments are constantly evolving, so physicians must combine deep technical expertise with compassionate care. For more than four decades, Dr. Khosrow Mahdavi has done precisely that by serving patients, teaching future physicians, and guiding forward-looking research. His career reflects a compassionate approach and an unwavering drive to improve outcomes in cancer treatment.

Building a Strong Foundation

Dr. Mahdavi began his career serving in the Iranian Navy from 1969 to 1972, an experience that shaped his discipline and commitment to the medical field. He earned a medical degree from the University of Tehran School of Medicine in 1969 and later completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1979, he was named a fellow in hematology-oncology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he refined his expertise and set the stage for a lifetime in oncology.

“I have always embraced challenges that made me stronger and better in all aspects of my life,” Dr. Mahdavi says. “Once I reach a level, I work as hard as anyone to continue moving forward.”

A Career in Patient Care and Leadership

Dr. Mahdavi joined Hoag Hospital in 1980 and has remained a cornerstone of the institution since. He served as chief of medical staff from 2009 to 2011, as immediate chief of staff from 2011 to 2013, and as chair of the Department of Hematology-Oncology from 2005 to 2007. In 2017, he became chair-elect of the Department of Hematology-Oncology, continuing to shape the hospital’s direction.

At the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, Dr. Mahdavi has taught future physicians as a clinical professor. “Being surrounded by younger professionals keeps me informed on new developments,” he explains. “I share my knowledge with them, and I learn from them as well.”

Research and Innovation

In addition to patient care, Dr. Mahdavi is committed to research. Since 2022, he has contributed to collaborative research initiatives by serving as the director of Nowarta Biopharma Inc. One of his most notable achievements includes his work with colleague Dr. Dillman at Hoag Hospital. “Together we have worked on providing vaccinations for various tumors,” Dr. Mahdavi notes. “Like many oncologists, I participated in national treatment protocols for different malignancies.”

Dr. Mahdavi is currently engaged in developing a new medicine and remains optimistic about its potential impact.

Recognition and Achievements

Dr. Mahdavi’s career has been marked by notable awards, including recognition as the top physician in Orange County in 2021 and 2022 and as the humanitarian of the year by the National Conference for Community and Justice in 2002. These honors underscore his dual commitment to clinical excellence and patient care.

Dr. Mahdavi is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Medical Association, and the Medical Oncology Association of Southern California.

Looking Forward: Sharing Knowledge and Continuing Care

As he reflects on his career, Dr. Mahdavi remains focused on what lies ahead. “I hope to continue practicing medicine in an environment where I can share my knowledge with younger colleagues while also learning from them,” he says.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Mahdavi treasures time with his family, which includes his wife of 52 years and their two sons. Whether listening to music or staying active, he finds balance and personal fulfillment. For Dr. Mahdavi, each new challenge is an opportunity to advance medicine, guide others, and improve the lives of patients.
