With 19 years of experience in dermatology and more than nine years as an educator and consultant, Carly Groth Cottam is a nationally recognized authority in combining medical-grade skincare consultations with successful sales execution. She has consistently ranked at the top of multiple markets and earned several industry awards.

Before launching  The Art of the Consult LLC, Groth Cottam spent 17 years at Roseville Dermatology, where she gained hands-on clinical experience that revealed key obstacles in skincare consulting and led her to develop solutions to overcome them. Today, through The Art of the Consult LLC, her team equips med spas, plastic surgery, and dermatology practices with Groth Cottam’s proven system, specifically structured for each clinic based on its SKU list. Additionally, it includes an easy-to-follow training guide that addresses three common obstacles providers face: time constraints, confidence gaps, and reluctance to be perceived as salespeople.

Carly Groth Cottam Background

As retail director at Roseville Dermatology, Groth Cottam built and led a medical-grade skincare consulting program, performing and managing patient consultations. Her other responsibilities included inventory management, strategic ordering, marketing, event planning, program development, and staff training. She also designed and implemented goal-setting strategies, created key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure success, and managed vendor relations to support mutual growth.

Groth Cottam was instrumental in driving a 2,500% increase in annual sales. She also directed the annual Evening of Beauty Open House event, overseeing all aspects from planning, catering, and logistics to guest registration and sales. Her strategic marketing efforts attracted more than 10% of new attendees, contributing to a remarkable 12,000% revenue increase over the years through one-on-one pre-event consultations focused on patient retention, annual treatment planning, and event-driven consultations and sales.

Sharing Her Knowledge

Groth Cottam, also known as Product_Guru, is the author of “The WHY Behind The Art of the Consult: Medical-Grade Skincare,” available on Kindle, Amazon, and at The Art of the Consult’s website. Designed for business owners and medical directors, the book provides insights into addressing regimen knowledge and skincare revenue gaps, implementing client-centered sales strategies that drive measurable growth, and creating KPIs for tracking client quality of care and revenue. It also introduces “Carly’s ALI Method” to enhance consultations and sales execution.

She also authored “Altruistic Retail: The Art of the Consult: Esthetician Student,” available on Kindle, Amazon, and at The Art of the Consult’s website. This book is written for estheticians and medical providers who want to master skin-concern-based regimen recommendations and optimize outcomes while increasing income and referrals. It further explores the application of “Carly’s ALI Method,” dives into product category knowledge, teaches the structure for comprehensive, skin-concern-based Skincare Regimen Sheets, empowers providers, and skyrockets confidence.

The Root of Success

Groth Cottam’s studies in entrepreneurial and business management at Brigham Young University–Idaho provided her with foundational skills that supported her entrepreneurial journey. She credits her unique blend of talents to insights gained from her family, including her father, an entrepreneur who started a computer company in the 1980s with her grandparents, and her mother, a dedicated teacher. She describes herself as an “educating salesperson,” combining a passion for teaching with effective sales strategies.

Outside of Her Profession

Playing soccer has been a cornerstone of Groth Cottam’s life, influencing both her personal growth and daily routine. She has dedicated 20 seasons to coaching the sport, including at the high school level. From 2004 to 2006, she played defensive tackle for the Sacramento Sirens in the International Women’s Football League, winning two national championships against New York and Atlanta. She also has a passion for cable wakeboarding and cherishes time with her family and friends.

Looking to the Future

Groth Cottam’s faith is at the center of all she does. Since childhood, she has felt called to philanthropy, even before fully understanding the word’s meaning. She later discovered that the original Greek root of the word philanthropy is philanthropia, meaning “love of humankind.” Guided by this purpose, she has made a formal commitment by founding the non-profit organization Philanthropia: The Ripple Effect.

Twenty percent of all sales at The Art of the Consult’s website are dedicated to funding programs in the U.S. and globally that empower women and support children in need.
