In the fast-evolving field of environmental health and safety, professionals like Mary A. Aderinto, PhD candidate, MS, CSP, ARM, ASP, are making a lasting impact by combining technical expertise with a deep commitment to community welfare.
As the director of environmental health, safety, and sustainability at Chairmans Foods, Aderinto is a force in both the civic and corporate spheres, focusing on the critical issues of workplace safety, sustainability, and environmental justice.
A Career Shaped by Compassion and Diplomacy
Aderinto’s path in health and safety began with a passion for protecting communities, especially minority groups affected by environmental hazards. “I became involved in my profession because I wanted to protect the less privileged and make sure their voices are heard,” she explains.
This dedication to serving underserved populations has shaped Aderinto’s entire career. She has consistently worked to address workplace safety and the broader issues of environmental justice while helping to clear toxic waste sites and advocating for communities exposed to harmful chemicals.
Aderinto’s professional journey is supported by extensive training and academic achievements, including a Master of Science in risk control from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. She is also currently pursuing a doctorate in public policy with a focus on environmental justice. She credits much of her success to her parents’ influence, the discipline they instilled in her, and her resilience to handle adversity.
Making a Difference: Safety During the Pandemic
One of Aderinto’s proudest moments came during the COVID-19 pandemic. “During the pandemic, I helped multiple facilities save lives,” she recalls. “We had exposures, but we lost no one.”
This achievement highlights Aderinto’s ability to adapt quickly to crises, ensuring the health and safety of workers during times of uncertainty. She developed strategies for self-contained areas and ensured worker safety by leading educational efforts on the importance of wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.
Aderinto’s work was essential to protecting her workforce and leading by example in safety and risk management. “In my profession, we are committed to preventing injuries and making sure people go home the same way they came,” she says. “I’ve always worked to make that a reality.”
Focus on Environmental Justice and Community Engagement
Aderinto is deeply committed to environmental justice, particularly in marginalized communities. She’s currently working on an article addressing how minorities are disproportionately affected by toxic waste and chemical dumps.
“There are many Superfund sites in communities where minorities live, and their voices often go unheard,” says Aderinto. Her article aims to bring attention to these issues and advocate for cleaner, safer environments for these communities. This is just one way she strives to make the world a better place.
In addition to her professional work, Aderinto is a passionate community volunteer. She actively supports local soccer teams and the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. “I want to make sure that future generations of leaders are prepared to make a positive impact in their communities,” she explains.
Looking Forward: Expanding Her Impact
Aderinto plans to expand her reach globally. She aims to be at the forefront of safety and sustainability while working with underserved communities worldwide. She says, “My goal is to help manage sustainability for the less privileged and lead safety initiatives on a global scale.”
Aderinto’s vision is clear: continue her work, expand her influence, and ensure that everyone, regardless of background, has access to a safe and healthy environment. With her unwavering dedication, Aderinto stands ready to continue making a significant impact on environmental health and safety.
