For many individuals, one of the challenges to achieving a successful and fulfilling career is discovering their talents and passion. However, embracing the unexpected has proved to be one of the keys to success for Neal Rummler, the chief executive officer of Maverick Marketing & Consulting LLC.

A promise to graduate from college without accumulating debt led Rummler to discover his natural aptitude in sales. Growing these skills and expanding his expertise into leadership has allowed him to achieve remarkable career milestones, including being named in the prestigious Marquis Who’s Who listing of prominent professionals.

Discovering a Talent for Sales

Rummler attended Brigham Young University, a private university in Provo, Utah, intending to attend law school post-graduation and start a career as an attorney. Financially minded, he endeavored to graduate without accumulating debt, as he felt this would give him a head start in life. The only means he found to do this without outside aid was to attend a summer sales program.

As part of the sales program, Rummler began selling pest control in the summer of 2013. He proved to be such an effective salesperson that he made enough to pay for his law school tuition and realized his dream of graduating free of debt.

In 2015, Rummler graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in American studies and a minor in business management. He proceeded to attend the Brigham Young University Law School. However, during his studies, he realized that his passion lay elsewhere. He graduated from the Brigham Young University Law School in 2018 with a Juris Doctor but opted not to take the bar exam. Instead, he returned to Columbus, Ohio, to once again ply his salesmanship skills in selling pest control.

Growing a Successful Sales Team

Rummler worked as a sales manager for Moxie Pest Services from 2013 to 2018. During this time, he recruited and built a team of 70 sales associates. Although he was finding success in this line of business, it came with a busy schedule and required traveling. This proved difficult for Rummler and his growing family. “I knew at that point that I needed to find something else so I could have a normal family life,” he states.

Exploring New Career Opportunities

In the coming years, Rummler transitioned to different positions with Moxie and other companies in pest control. He worked as the regional sales director for Moxie Pest Services from 2021 to 2023, the regional sales director for Fox Pest Control in 2023, and the vice president of direct-to-home sales for Hawx Smart Pest Control from 2023 to 2024.

In 2024, Rummler decided he was ready to make his next major career shift. Using the business and leadership skills he had accumulated across his years in pest control sales, he founded his own company, Maverick Marketing & Consulting LLC. As the chief executive officer, his daily duties include training his sales team, securing finance options, and finalizing contracts.

Uncovering the Keys to Success

Despite this being Rummler’s first entrepreneurial endeavor, he has effectively led his growing business. As a full-service marketing company, Maverick Marketing & Consulting LLC specializes in providing businesses with the tools they need to succeed, particularly in the pest control services field. Rummler has observed how most owners strive to sell their businesses to private equity. To assist them, he emphasizes factors that make their businesses more attractive, such as high customer retention.

“They’re typically not making a profit via door-to-door accounts that are sold in two to three years, whereas what I provide allows them to profit in year one, and that helps facilitate their growth or helps reinvest in their business and makes their company more attractive to private equity,” Rummler explains. “I am able to help them grow in a responsible way.”

For Rummler’s growth of success, he credits his personal sense of drive and motivation, particularly when faced with setbacks. He believes that though many, including himself, have been conditioned to view mistakes negatively, the challenges he has overcome have helped both him and his company evolve and discover new opportunities.
