As senior vice president of U.S. medical professional liability at Aspen Insurance, Logsdon plays a key role in product development, broker relationships, and underwriting strategies. She is also involved in assuring compliance with state regulations, updating underwriting guidelines to address constantly evolving healthcare delivery systems, and ensuring that she and her team maintain the corporate culture and values amidst the daily challenges of underwriting. Since joining the company in 2016, she and her team have significantly contributed to its growth.
A Proven Track Record of Expert Leadership
With more than four decades of experience, Logsdon has assembled a team of seasoned and experienced underwriters who are recognized in the industry for their underwriting expertise, as well as actuarial science, product development, and marketing.
Before joining Aspen, Logsdon was a senior vice president of medical underwriting at Hallmark Pro, Hallmark Specialty Insurance Company, where she managed operations from 2010 to 2016. She also held leadership positions at General Star Management Co., a Berkshire Hathaway company, Interstate Insurance Group, and CNA Insurance.
Before pivoting into insurance, Logsdon taught high school English Literature for five years. She began her career in insurance with Shand Morahan Co. (now part of Markel), where she played a key role in managing medical programs and starting an excess and surplus program for doctors. It was there she met her husband, Stanton L. Fellwock. Her daughter, Elizabeth Burdett, was born a year later.
Industry Insights and Challenges
The healthcare industry is experiencing significant shifts. Mergers and acquisitions are increasing, and private equity firms continue buying out healthcare practices, raising concerns about profitability goals over healthcare. Another trend is the widespread use of AI in the field. This technological advancement raises concerns about oversight and ethical use.
Logsdon also notes how the current political environment is affecting health care by removing health care decisions from the patient and the provider to legislators with no medical training. Guard rails have been removed, standards of care, which have been created over years of experience, are becoming meaningless, and the healthcare provider is more vulnerable to negligence. These insights into the state of the industry reflect Logsdon’s informed, thoughtful leadership.
A People-Centered Path to Success
Logsdon attributes much of her success to her upbringing. “My father was a minister,” she says. “We were always very social and worked with communities.” Growing up in a socially engaged family, she developed strong interpersonal skills. As a result, working with people came naturally to her.
Education further strengthened her ability to lead and mentor. After earning a bachelor’s degree in education and English from Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University), Logsdon spent five years teaching before transitioning into insurance. Her early roles at Shand Morahan (Markel) and CNA allowed her to develop expertise in medical programs and create a surplus alternative program for physicians tailored to special needs.
Career Highlights and Future Plans
Among Logsdon’s career highlights are meetings with many business leaders in both healthcare and insurance, including an encounter with billionaire investor Warren Buffett while working at General Star. Support from colleagues has been and continues to be a rewarding aspect of her journey. While retirement is a consideration, she remains passionate about her work.
Outside of the workplace, Logsdon continues to support women’s rights organizations and PETA.
A Lasting Impact
A belief in personal and professional growth has influenced Logsdon’s approach to leadership. Throughout her career, she has emphasized teamwork, collaboration, and a solutions-driven mindset. A dedication to excellence and community involvement exemplifies her lifelong commitment to making a difference.
Logsdon’s leadership, expertise, and mentorship continue to shape the field of medical professional liability. With a career defined by integrity, her impact will last well beyond her time in the industry.
