Traditional financial systems often perpetuate inequities, but Bitcoin and cryptocurrency offer transformative potential to disrupt power structures, foster economic independence, and empower the disenfranchised.
Two years ago, my life took an unexpected turn. In November 2023, I was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for bank fraud and money laundering tied to a loan from the Main Street Lending Program. Alongside my prison term, I was ordered to pay $252,143.35 in restitution.
While incarceration is a dark chapter in anyone’s story, for me, it became a turning point. In prison, I met countless women whose lives were disrupted by financial crimes tied to the traditional banking system. Many were victims of systemic inequities, with little understanding of the financial structures that failed them. These encounters deepened my conviction that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, with their decentralized and transparent nature, could be a tool for justice and empowerment.
Bitford Digital: Building a Better Industry
Upon my release, I co-founded Bitford Digital, a company dedicated to sustainable and ethical Bitcoin mining. At Bitford, we prioritize research and development to create state-of-the-art mining equipment that balances efficiency with environmental responsibility. Our goal is to lead by example, showcasing that cryptocurrency can be both innovative and ethical.
But Bitford Digital is more than a business. It’s a platform for change. We’re committed to diversifying the tech industry, particularly in cryptocurrency and blockchain, where women are still vastly underrepresented.
Championing Women in Crypto
To put it bluntly, the crypto industry has a bit of a “bro culture” problem. A December 2021 study revealed that among the 121 leading crypto companies, only five — just 4.13 percent — were founded by women. Equally troubling was that women made up less than 10 percent of partners across all crypto funds.
This disparity isn’t just an issue of representation. It’s a missed opportunity for innovation. There have been many studies that illustrate how diversity and inclusion offer organizations numerous advantages, such as stronger financial performance, expanded talent pools, and enhanced problem-solving capabilities.
Diverse teams drive better decisions and broader perspectives. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to mentor women in tech and finance, helping them break into Bitcoin and blockchain.
Through initiatives like workshops, mentorship programs, and partnerships with educational institutions, Bitford Digital is creating pathways for women to enter this field. We’re not just opening doors. We’re tearing down walls.
Financial Literacy for the Marginalized
My experiences in prison also revealed a glaring need for financial education. Too many marginalized individuals are left behind by a system that prioritizes profits over people. At Bitford Digital, we’ve launched financial literacy programs with Bitcoin Transformation Community (BTCTC) that are tailored to incarcerated individuals and underrepresented communities. By teaching them about Bitcoin and decentralized finance, we’re empowering them to break cycles of economic disenfranchisement.
These programs focus on practical knowledge, such as understanding wallets, securing cryptocurrency, and using Bitcoin as a tool for savings and investments. It’s not just about teaching the “how” but also the “why” behind decentralized systems.
Pioneering Ethical Practices in Mining
Bitcoin mining has often been criticized for its environmental impact. At Bitford Digital, we’re challenging that narrative by investing in sustainable practices. From using renewable energy to helping source efficient hardware for our clients, we’re proving that profitability and sustainability can coexist. We also advocate for transparency in the industry, setting a standard for ethical mining practices.
We’re also actively working to educate our clients and others about scams in our industry. I’ve led workshops on how to avoid getting scammed, and we’re setting the bar in hardware procurement by offering free education on industry scams. Plus, we’re connecting our clients with a trusted network of companies known for their great reputations.
Looking Ahead
The future of Bitcoin is bright, but it will only reach its full potential if it’s inclusive. My vision for Bitford Digital includes:
- Launching financial education programs specifically designed for incarcerated individuals and marginalized groups.
- Promoting domestic production of Bitcoin mining hardware to boost local economies and reduce reliance on imports.
- Advocating for transparency and ethical practices across the cryptocurrency industry.
A Call to Action
My journey from e-commerce marketer to Bitcoin miner, and from inmate to advocate, has been one of redemption and reinvention. It’s proof that second chances are not just possible but transformative. As I work to bring more women into Bitcoin, I’m reminded of the resilience and strength that exists in each of us.
To the women reading this: Bitcoin needs you. The world needs you. Let’s break the glass ceiling together and build a financial future where everyone has a seat at the table.
