Theme: be lovely

Here at wine down and chill we get it that you’ve been in lockdown for months and that the uncertainty of what lies ahead can be tough to work through. We’ve also seen a series of tragic events that have made it crystal clear – it’s time for change. Racism in any form should not and can not be tolerated any longer. Together, we need to find common ground and work to drive change. Let’s start by being lovely towards each other!

Listen: to something lovely

There are more than 50 albums and nearly 16,000 songs with “lovely” in the title name or lyrics. You can listen to them all here. I didn’t notice many contemporary hits but there’s always something for everyone in a collection that broad. Whatever you choose to listen to for your wine down and chill moments, enjoy!

Learn: Riesling

Riesling was one of the first grapes planted in the then-emerging Washington state wine growing region. It was first planted in 1967 and has attained world-class status with more than 5,300 acres currently planted – which makes it one of the largest Riesling sites in the country. Alas, that’s not enough to make the Top 3 varietals planted in the country but it does rank fourth.

We’ve featured Rieslings before, but not from this region. Wines made from this grape create surprisingly versatility when it comes to food pairings ranging from spicy hot dishes to clean-palette options like sushi. Rieslings offer a wide range from light and acidic to late-harvest options which are sweet and smooth. Characteristic flavor notes are aromatic peaches, pears, honey and citrus.

B Lovely Riesling to wine down and chill

Wine: B Lovely Riesling

B Lovely Riesling is on the lighter side of wines made with this grape variety. With some light acidity, this not-too-sweet wine is bursting with the aroma of peaches. This wine down and chill selection is perfect for sitting outside, day drinkin’ and enjoying the sunshine. Priced at only $13 per bottle and widely available nation-wide, you’ll be able to have a few friends over – at an appropriate social distance, of course.

Dine: rotisserie chicken

Well, the theme is about being lovely and lovebirds, so this dinner option just kind of seemed to flow. Order a rotisserie chicken, shred the meat (use seitan strips for your veg option), mix it up with a little BBQ sauce, chipotle seasoning and mayo, then pack it on a slider bun or panini. Heat it up and put a dill pickle (or five) on the side and you’ll have an almost-instant wine down and chill dinner.

Watch: The Lovebirds

This movie has met with mixed reaction. If you can get through the first ten minutes or so, where the dialogue is uncomfortable with a couple fighting, you’ll be on your way to a lot of laughs. The unexpected pairing of Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani in “The Lovebirds” works. On the path to relationship destruction, the couple is forced to team up to extricate themselves from a murder that they’re wrongly accused of. Although it doesn’t sound like a wine down and chill comedy, indeed, it is. And it reminds us that we CAN get along if we try.

It’s the weekend. Time to wine down and chill. Cheers!
