What I’m Excited to See at the SAG Awards Tonight

Published on January 19, 2020

The SAG Awards are on tonight, Sunday January 19th starting at 8pm. Here is everything you need to know.

Robert De Niro is this year’s recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. This is a very exciting year for De Niro who played Frank Sheeran in The Irishman and Murray Franklin in Joker. Both films have received a lot of praise this award season.

Only a few years ago, The Handmaid’s Tale was the first streaming show to receive an Award. Now every award show is dominated by streaming shows and movies from Stranger Things, to The Crown, to The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. It will be exciting to find out which programs will win out and what that could potentially mean for the future of the entertainment industry. Is this a consequence of people quitting cable or do consumers just prefer the types of stories that are more likely to be told on streaming platforms rather than networks?

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series will be an interesting category to look out for. Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan are both nominated for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which into its third season continues to receive critical acclaim. Will the hype allow one of them to snag the award from Phoebe Waller-Bridge nominated for fellow Amazon show Fleabag who won a Golden Globe for her performance only a few weeks prior.

Maisel, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino shows a direction of entertainment that many viewers crave. In a world where multi-screening happens regularly, Maisel is a show that entices viewers to stop scrolling through Instagram while watching. Not only are the costumes and direction fun to watch but it has the classic marks of Amy Sherman-Palladino who you might remember as the woman with the great hat who told every lady to sit while the pee or you might remember as the creator Gilmore Girls.

Many continue to binge Gilmore Girls because it, like Maisel, shows women in an interesting way. They talk fast, make a lot of references, and can be very witty and funny which makes for attention capturing entertainment. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel has won three SAG Awards already, let’s see if they can snag another one.

Tonight there will be many stars of your favorite movies and shows. Be sure to tune in to see them dressed to impress and hopefully take home some awards (or at least a swag bag). If you have cable you can watch the SAG Awards on TNT or TBS. If you don’t have cable then you can watch it on many streaming services including Hulu, Youtube, Apple TV, and Amazon.
