Transgender Character Coming to the Marvel Universe

Published on January 3, 2020

Over the weekend, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige participated in a Q&A session with the New York Film Academy. In the interview, Feige seemingly confirmed that a transgender character is coming to the Marvel universe.

A student asked Feige if he had plans to include more LGBTQ and specifically transgender characters to the Marvel universe. Feige responded with a resounding yes, saying that such characters would be coming “very soon.”

According to Feige, the movie is shooting now, though he did not identify the title of the movie. We also do not know any details about the specific upcoming LGBTQ and transgender characters.

In early 2019, Marvel experienced resounding success with Captain Marvel, Marvel’s first standalone movie with a female lead. Now, it appears the studio is making significant steps toward inclusivity and diversity with its characters.

In 2020, fans will get another female-led movie with Black Widow. Also joining the Marvel universe in Phase 4 is Shang-Chi, a new hero bringing an Asian lead to the studios.

Also rumored is that Thor: Love and Thunder will feature a relationship between Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. You will definitely find me cheering in the theaters if that goes down, though it seems like a long shot.

With all of these new additions to the Marvel universe, fans should be really excited about what is to come in Phase 4. More heroes, and perhaps most importantly, more representation. In the coming years, it seems that more viewers will be able to find heroes who both look like them and represent their identity and communities.

Of course, as a society, we still have a long way to go toward true representation. There are more important moves for LGBTQ rights than superheroes. Nevertheless, having better representation on the big screen is a step in the right direction.
