If you haven’t heard the name Tom Segura, fix your life. The Cincinnati-born comedian is one of the best around. He recently wrapped his “Take It Down” tour, which took him all over the world. Segura is most famous for his Netflix specials, Your Mom’s House Podcast, and for creating the sure-to-be-iconic character, DJ Dad Mouth. Soon enough, Segura will break new ground at Netflix by releasing two new specials. One of which will be in Spanish.
A New Netflix Special
Segura’s upcoming special is in English. Filmed at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas, Tom Segura: Ball Hog will stream on Netflix starting March 24th. Rejoice, everybody. Netflix recently signed a deal with Segura for two new specials, including a Spanish-speaking one scheduled to debut in the fall. In a statement, Segura said:
“Netflix has rapidly changed the way comedy is consumed around the world, and by releasing a Spanish language special, I look forward to being able to reach a new audience that Jo Koy and Ali Wong will never get. Estoy muy emocionado por la oportunidad de entretener las amigas de mi mama.”
Translation: I am very excited for the opportunity to entertain my mom’s friends.
Breaking New Ground?
Segura isn’t the first comedian to perform in different languages. Others have done it. Famously, comic Eddie Izzard performs in the language of wherever he’s performing. Nobody else goes that far. Unless we’re mistaken, nobody else has ever released comedy specials on Netflix in different languages, either. It’s a fantastic move on Segura and Netflix’s part to reach a whole new audience.
Surely, Segura’s fanbase will only grow. The comedian, who’s half-Peruvian, learned Spanish from his mother. More and more, he’s been performing in Spanish and making new fans. On his upcoming tour dates, he’ll perform both in English and Spanish. He now even has a podcast in Spanish.
What Else to Watch From Segura
There’s no downplaying Segura’s talents on stage. He has this fantastic “less is more” style. While some comedians are all bells and whistles, the lack of bells and whistles is what makes Segura so good. He’s not getting laughs by constantly putting on voices and making large physical gestures. Segura relies on the strength of his material.
He’s a rare comic who’s both naturally charismatic and a strong writer. Not every famous comedian poses those two strengths. More often than not, they’re charismatic or just loud enough to come off charismatic. Segura, on the other hand, has loads of range as a storyteller. He can keep a joke short and sweet or go long with a story and never lose an audience.
Segura is a quiet beast on stage.
