Now, this is the exact sort of news people want to wake up to hear. The comedic masterminds behind the cult Canadian comedy sketch show, The Kids in the Hall, are returning for more episodes. The series originally ran from 1989 to 1995 on Canada’s CBC before it gained more popularity in the states. The series was a fan favorite on HBO and Comedy Central. In the 25 years since the show has been off the air, it has remained beloved, popular, and pure heaven to revisit.
More Kids in the Hall, Please
Thanks to Amazon, we’re getting more of Kids in the Hall. Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson are all returning for brand new episodes. SNL creator and Canada’s finest, Lorne Michaels, is back in the producer’s chair. In a statement, Michaels said:
“Even after 30 years, The Kids in the Hall has retained its brilliance and originality. We are happy to be bringing back all of the original ‘Kids’ for the new series.”
A Long Time Coming
Three years ago, Michaels started talking about bringing the gang back together. After a Mr. Show reunion happened between Bob Odenkirk and David Cross on Netflix, Michaels texted The Kids in the Hall with another reunion idea. Why not make six episodes for Netflix or Amazon, he suggested. Now, they’re doing it. The group hasn’t performed together in years. They did a movie, Brain Candy, and toured as a group, but it’s been ten years since they were performing as a dynamic team.
Why it Didn’t Happen Sooner
A part of the problem with a reunion is that everyone of the Kids was usually busy. Whenever one or two of the team were free, someone else would be on the job. Timing was never right, but years ago, McDonald suggested the time was soon. He was right, thank the Lord.
Amazon’s First Canadian Series
Amazon and the kids are breaking some new ground with the comedy series. The new episodes will mark Amazon’s first original Canadian series. Talk about a classic win for Canada, ay? Amazon has filmed several shows in the beautiful country, but never made a show bred and brewed there.
Vice President of International Originals for Amazon Studios, James Farrell, celebrated continuing to do business in the land of Candada:
“We’ve been investing in Canada for several years and are excited to add to that momentum by making The Kids in the Hall the first Canadian Amazon Original series. The Kids in the Hall is an iconic show with a deep-rooted fan base. Several of our global hits, including The Boys, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and The Expanse have been filmed in Canada and we are looking forward to continuing our work with talented producers and crew teams across the country to bring this series to our Prime members around the world.”
Why It’s Fantastic News
A whole new generation will get introduced to The Kids in the Hall. Ideally, the entire series will be available to stream before whenever the new episodes arrive. No release date was spoken of by Amazon, although in the next year or so sounds reasonable.
The comedy in The Kids in the Hall holds up beautifully. Very little dates the show. It wasn’t about references so much and was often ahead of the curve on subjects. For the most part, it’s just masterfully orchestrated silliness. Just brilliant sketch comedy that rarely ever went stale or out of style. The hip show and tone would play great to youngsters today just as it did in the ‘90s. The Kids in the Hall never grow old.
