The holiday guide for gym rats

The holiday season is a good time to let loose, stuff your face, and loosen the ‘ol belt. Especially after a tough year. However, especially during a tough year, it’s good to stay active, keep your immune system strong, and remain healthy during the sugary holiday season. This year, gyms across the United States and the world have been shut down due to COVID-19. Working out from home is what’s safest right now. A lot of people miss the gym at the moment, but with only a few pieces of workout gear, you can create a home gym without taking up too much room or burning a hole in your pocket.

For the holidays, at Grit Daily we’re recommending an array of gifts to give your friends and family members who want to stay active or get more active in the new year.

TRX Home2 System

This is the perfect gift for anybody who spends their time on the go. If you leave town for work or leisure, these straps are the best travel companion. They hardly take up any room in your luggage. For convenience’s sake, TRX is a great system for gym fans. For quality, it’s a top-notch option as well. The straps are strong, couldn’t be easier to set up, and provide a wide variety of both single muscle and full-body workouts. When you buy TRX, there’s a code to access a series of classes on your phone as well. The classes provide you with all the workouts you need to stay active during the pandemic.

TRX is like carrying a home gym with you in your bag. At home, those straps are a lot of fun, too. If you don’t have a lot of free time on your hands, you can easily get in 10 minutes here or 10 minutes there to stay active. You can go at your own pace with an intense or low-key workout. The staps are simple, but they are effective, addictive, and a great gift for any friend or family member who travels. They’re even great to bring to a park, catch up some fresh air, and workout. Workout where you want with TRX.

Peloton Bike

Unlike TRX, Peloton is not easy or affordable. The Peloton bikes are ridiculously expensive, but they are also ridiculously awesome. Launched by a kickstarter campaign back in 2013, the bike has been a go-to piece of equipment for the richie richs of the world. It is laughable how expensive the bikes are, but if you can afford it, they are worth it. I’ve tried a Peloton bike a few times, and it’s a great experience. The classes keep you engaged, and so does the music and chatting with friends. It’s a big expensive gift, but for anyone who’s interested and has the money, go with Peloton.

A Real Bike

Admittedly, a real bike is cheaper and more fun than an actual Peloton bike. Bikes were in huge demand this year due to COVID-19. Right now, a bicycle is a great way to get out of the house, stay healthy, and maintain social distancing. Prior to 2020, I had never seen so many people on bikes in Los Angeles. It’s not a bike-friendly city in the slightest, but during the pandemic, a reliable bike is a good friend to have. For the new year, hop on a bike, go explore, and enjoy the breeze.

Nike Sale

Nike currently has a 40% off sale on a wide variety of products. You can never go wrong with Nike. Their shoes, clothes, and other workout gear are always top of the line. After ESPN’s incredibly entertaining doc, The Last Dance, which was about Michael Jordan and the Bulls, sales for Air Jordans skyrocketed. For the holidays, a pair of Jordans for any Bulls or Jordan fan would brighten up their day.

Another great gift for any Nike fan: Phil Knight’s “Shoe Dog.” The Nike owner’s memoir is a fantastic and inspiring read about the struggles of fulfilling an epic vision. A must-read for anyone interested in the company.

Resistance Bands

Like the TRX system, resistance bands don’t take up any room and provide such a convenient way to workout. They are great for all ages, too. There’s a variety of ways to use them and work your whole body. Resistance bands are cheap, and you can find a million videos online for how to use them most effectively in a workout.

Boxing Bag

For the next few months, many of us will still be stuck at home and staying safe. The COVID-19 vaccine won’t be widely available in the United States until March or April. In the meantime, one great way to workout and handle stress and anxiety is to take a lot of shots at a boxing bag. It’s a great cardio workout that builds strength, works the abdominal muscles, and if you mix it up with crunches or burpees, provides a full-body workout. A boxing bag is exhausting and rewarding.

Whey, Whey, Whey

Anybody who lifts probably consumes their fair share of whey. That also means they’re constantly running out of the powder. It is a good gift for anyone who enjoys their fair share of easy-to-drink protein. Flavored whey may not be the most obvious gift for the gym nut in your life, but trust me, they would appreciate it.
