The story of Selena Quintanilla-Perez is about to be told again. This time, the iconic singer is getting her own series based on her life, and death. Her story hasn’t been told in film since 1997 when Jennifer Lopez played Selena in a biopic about the stars life and tragic death.
Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a world-famous Tejano singer in the mid 1990’s from Texas. She was ranked posthumously as one of the most influential Latin musicians of all time. She also remains canonized as one of the most famous latin artists in American music history. Throughout her career, Selena went on to win countless awards for her many albums and releases. We all know what happened in the end, though, when Selena was murdered by her former colleague, Yolanda Saldivar. The murder was documented in the famed biopic, which was produced by Selena’s family.
Selena on Netflix
The Netflix series will, again, bring Selena to life and honor her prolific, yet short-lived career. A scripted series about Selena was the next thing we all assumed would come out of the Quintanilla family. The family has reportedly been working alongside Netflix during the entire creation process of the series. They are also listed as producers, yet again. Since her death, the Quintanilla family has been working tirelessly to make sure that Selena’s name is always remembered.
Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming Netflix series and had this to say; “Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives,” said Quintanilla in an interview. She went on to discuss the logistics of the upcoming series, “We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come,” she said.
Other New Shows & Movies
Netflix has been busy producing its own original content. Netflix recently released its first feature-length film, titled “Bird Box.” The movie stars Sandra Bullock and tells the story of a woman and her two children. The story progresses as they fight to escape a plague-like monster that has invaded the earth. The film has received mostly positive reviews thus far. Though it’s often compared to that of “A Quiet Place.” A Quiet Place was released in theaters earlier this year.
The streaming site also announced recently that it plans to create a series based on the fantastic world of the Roald Dahl books. The series is currently in production and brings to life stories like Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and The BFG in ways never before seen. Netflix has not yet announced when it will release the Selena series. However, the site promises that it will make fans feel closer to the fallen star.
