Start your engines henny, Mama Ru is headed to Studio 8H. Saturday Night Live announced that, for the first time ever, RuPaul will host the show for one of its February episodes. The announcement came as they all do; the NBC show tweeted a photo of their bulletin board featuring the hosts and musical guests.

Also making headlines is the musical guest for Mama Ru’s episode. Justin Bieber heads back to SNL for his third performance. He last appeared on the show as host and musical guest in 2013.

A Brief History of RuPaul

If you don’t know who RuPaul is, you should know who RuPaul is. RuPaul Charles brought the world of drag into the mainstream. Known as the mother of drag, his influence has transformed the art by helping it emerge from the underground club scene. By bringing forth drag to the public eye, he created a platform for the LGBTQ+ community in the pop culture world.

In 2009, after years of starring in films and creating music, RuPaul premiered his new reality show, RuPaul’s Drag Race. The show features drag queens competing to become “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” It later spawned two official sister shows, RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars and RuPaul’s Drag U.

Following the success of Drag Race in the states, several spin-offs of the show appeared in countries such as Chile, Thailand and soon-to-be Canada. However in 2019, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK—the first spin-off to feature RuPaul—premiered, with a second season already in the works.

In addition to Drag Race, he stars as the lead in the Netflix original series, AJ and the Queen, streaming now.

Joining RuPaul as an SNL debut host is Houston Texans defensive end, JJ Watt. His episode airs one week prior on February 1; country singer Luke Combs serves as the musical guest for that night.
