Rihanna Is Having None Of The Super Bowl Halftime Show

Published on October 23, 2018

Is there even a reason to watch the Super Bowl if the Halftime Show isn’t going to be anything special? Honestly, no.

Rihanna has turned down the opportunity to play at the Super Bowl Halftime show in support of Colin Kaepernick. The NFL has had quite the PR nightmare on its hands since Kaepernick chose to kneel during the National Anthem at the 49’ers final preseason game in 2016. Kaepernick credits the action as a form of protest for the Black Lives Matter movement. The movement sparked in the last decade to protest police brutality of people of color in America. Since the protest, Kaepernick was blackballed from the NFL for his activism. However, companies like Nike saluted his bravery by featuring him in a national ad campaign in August of this year.

Kaepernick is currently in a spicy legal battle against the NFL. The former player, who has not played since last year, believes that the company is blackballing him because of the protest move. Critics have both praised and condemned Kaepernick for the move. Some claim that the move was anti-American and offensive to those fighting for the country. Other critics praise the move, citing it as a necessary move to draw attention to a very real issue in America today.

Previous Halftime Show Performances

The Super Bowl Halftime Show has recently seen iconic performances from artists like Beyonce and Lady Gaga. The show draws millions of viewers every year and has become a major pop culture event in American entertainment. Rihanna will not be joining the list of major female pop acts to grace the Halftime Show with her presence, but Maroon 5 is said to have taken the gig in her place. Neither Rihanna nor the NFL have commented about the choice yet, according to Pitchfork. The Super Bowl will take place in Atlanta in 2019.

Rihanna has been very busy releasing everything but music. The Barbados-born pop star recently released her own line of lingerie and intimates under the Fenty brand. Fenty is also the name of her makeup line [Grit Daily link], Fenty Beauty. The line has garnered huge success in the beauty world since its initial release in September 2017. The pop star said she would also love to dip her toes into things like furniture making in the future. We’re really going to be sitting on a Fenty couch and reapplying Fenty mascara after we wipe our tears with a Fenty tissue before we get new music from this woman.

The Super Bowl LIII and Halftime Show will take place on February 3, 2019. The event will happen in Atlanta at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Maroon 5 are rumored to have taken the place as performers for the Halftime show as Rihanna will not be performing.
