Netflix released the full trailer for its new take on Sabrina the teenage witch, ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which will be released on October 26th. The show follows 16-year-old Sabrina Spellman, half mortal and half witch, as she navigates high school and her classmates.

Most of us remember the 90’s version, as well as the cartoon. The cute and funny take on witchcraft and growing pains quickly became a hit, and the original Sabrina series lasted seven seasons. In the 90’s, Sabrina lived in Massachusetts with her two quirky aunts, Hilda and Zelda, and a talking cat named Salem. Her magical prowess often got her into some hilariously sticky situations, especially with her boyfriend Harvey.

Well, Netflix decided to go another way with this version of Sabrina. Forget the giggly blonde of the 90’s, this 2018 version of Sabrina is out in the woods summoning goat-headed demons. And maybe that’s exactly the character we need.

The series doesn’t look like it’s full on horror, but isn’t a sitcom either. Netflix released a little preview about a month ago, with it’s much darker take on the series. Sabrina still lives in a small town with her two aunts, but in a much darker, creepier house.

The trailer shows the teen going through something pretty normal for a teenager: Sabrina is about to turn 16, and has to figure out who she is. However, for a teenage witch, that means something else entirely. It looks like our favorite heroine has to choose between her mortal life and her friends, or life as a witch. And these witches don’t look like they’re playing.

From the montage in the trailer, there’s some serious looking magical rituals going on, a teenage witch wandering through the woods, and some sort of blood oath. The trailer also introduces a few new characters, including the school’s headmistress, Madame Satan. There’s also another group of girl witches (will they be friends or foes?), a few magical male characters it looks like Sabrina will have to face off with, and an adorable, hissing black cat.

Of course, the series doesn’t look completely humorless… the end of the trailer suggests that we’ll see some of that familiar sibling rivalry out of Hilda and Zelda, and some snarky comments from the staff and students at the school (it is high school after all).

Kiernan Shipka, from Mad Men, will be playing Sabrina, while Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto portray the new dark Aunt Hilda and Aunt Zelda. According to The Hollywood Reporter revealed in December 2017, “the Sabrina order is for two, 10-episode seasons that would shoot back to back,” so expect a cliffhanger at the end of this season.

The 90’s and early 2000’s was all about strong female witches – so it’s great to see a new series take over. For fans of Charmed,  The Craft, and Willow from Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, it seems like the ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ is going to fill a certain magical void.
