Netflix Launches Special Collection for International Women’s Day

Published on March 4, 2020

International Women’s Day is coming up this Sunday, March 8. In honor of the occasion, Netflix launched a special collection of TV shows, movies, and documentaries all recommended by and chosen for women.

The collection was curated by an amazing group of women. Ava DuVernay, Janet Mock, Lana Condor, Laurie Nunn, Millie Bobby Brown, Petra Costa, Salma Hayek, Sophia Loren, and Yalitza Aparicio all contributed to creating the collection.

Called Because She Watched, the collection is wide-ranging and includes content from various different genres and countries.

The introduction video alone is engaging and inspirational. It’s narrated by To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before actress Lana Condor. The video features clips of all sorts of moving moments from women in these shows and movies. This video made me want to go straight to Netflix and start watching.

What’s In The Collection?

The Crown, Orange Is the New Black, Sex Education, When They See Us, Grace & Frankie, and Unbelievable are all included in the collection. There are so many amazing films and shows available through Because She Watched that it’s impossible to name them all.

There’s stand up comedy by women, documentaries about women and their accomplishments, projects directed by women, and stories that women connect with. This collection covers all the bases and has something every woman will be happy to curl up and watch.

Netflix Moving in The Right Direction

This is not just an inspirational way to honor women. It’s also a genius marketing move in the midst of the ultra-competitive streaming wars going on between platforms. With more platforms available now than ever, Netflix has to fight to retain users and continue its growth.

Putting together a collection like this is a great way to draw in viewers who may have drifted over to other platforms in recent years. Anyone who sees this collection of top-notch TV shows and films will want to immediately grab a glass of wine and some popcorn and blow off responsibilities for the rest of the day. This is, of course, exactly what Netflix is aiming for, and what it needs to survive in these competitive times.

Because She Watched isn’t just around for International Women’s Day. The collection will be available all year
